I stay there for the rest of the evening and even spend the night too. My side hurts too much to do anything, and I had a really bad migraine.

To pass the time, Dally and I watched Mickey Mouse. I hate Minnie and Daisy. They are all so positive and happy that it makes me sick. I can't stand overly happy people. We also smoked, and played poker. Dallas Winston now owes me ninety dollars.

We didn't talk about him kissing me on the head, it probably was nothing anyway. He acted like it hadn't ever happened so I did too. He's probably worried I would ruin his bad boy reputation.

Night time fell, and I refused to watch the news. The next day came, then the next. To keep my mind off all the stories, I asked Dally about how he got this place which was the basement of an old pizza place and how he found it.

"Well, I was a little kid, after I moved here, I was playing army with my buddy, Ash, and we were searching for a so called secret headquarters and we went to the old pizza place, which is where you are resting now, darling daffodil." I threw a paper wad at him and he chuckled. "Anyway, we found some stairs, right? Ash doesn't want to go down, so get this, I pushed him down the stairs cause I didn't want to go by myself." He smiled and I started to laugh.

"You really pushed him down the stairs?" I managed to say through the laughs.

"You doubt my actions, little Rose, but yes, I did," Dally replied. "The basement was crawling with spiders though, so we went to the back of this place and there was a small shed that was vacant. Ash moved to New Jersey and I visit from time to time, so I use this place and Buck's as my home. Did I tell you I once left Ash in the shed and locked it by accident and he was stuck in here for about an hour and a half? I," he did quotation marks around the next word, "'forgot' him in there but I was mad at him all the same."

"You were a bad boy then too, huh?"

"Once a hood, always a hood," he says, smirking.

"You're not a hood, you're just a bad boy," I say in a matter of factly. "You need a time out to get your manners back in shape!" I raise my head high and point to the corner of the room from my side of the couch.

"Please, oh please don't put me in a time out, Aster! I'm gonna die of heartbreak," Dallas teased, putting his hand on his chest. "I'll do anything! Just not the corner!"

"Your begging means nothing to a queen like me," I laugh. "Do one nice thing and you will be free from the bastard corner."

"Anything at all?" he asks mysteriously.

"Yeah, sure." I begin to play with a piece of loose string and I feel the weight of the cushion under my butt go down. Dally is sitting next to me, his arm around my shoulders. I smile. "Is that your good deed, lad?"

"Not even close, kid," he says, and he kisses my cheek. I feel my cheeks warm and my eyes widen.

"What the hell?" I ask. I try and stand up but my side hurts so much that I fall back down onto the couch.

"Hehehehe, you can't stand up," Dally teased.

"Seriously, man, why did you do that?" I asked. "You don't even like me, let alone respect me."

"I don't know, man. Maybe it's because I care about you or I'm screwed. I don't know take your pick." He put his arm that was once around me and ruffled his hair. "Aster, how did you really get out of the cooler?"

"What do you mean?"

"You needed money to get you out. Bout five thousand bucks, am I right?"

"I don't know what you are talking about, cause it sure ain't true." Ah, but it was. Somebody bailed me out with five thousand dollars. I always thought it was my mom, that she still cared and wanted me. But I realized it wasn't my mom who saved me from that bastard place, it was Dallas Winston. His gaze avoiding mine made me know it was true. "You did it, didn't you?"

"That's why I was in jail, man, for stealing, but it wasn't serious so they let me off early."

"Why'd you do it, Winston?" I ask. I look towards him, but he doesn't raise his eyes off the ground.

"Like I said before, either I'm screwed or I care about you, Aster. Take your pick," he says. He closes his eyes and puts his fingers on his temple.

"I like the second option the best." He looks at me with eyes I've never seen before. His icy eyes filled with hatred of the world were now soft blue and filled with hurt. I kiss him. My first kiss was when I was fourteen, shared with Johnny Cade. I immediately pull back, filled with guilt. "You're free." I smile and look to see Dally's expression.

But I was disappointed yet again.

"Look, man, I hope I didn't give ya the wrong idea..."

"No, you are just a joke, Dallas Winston. A big joke." I get up, the pain in my side has weakened but it still hurt bad. "I try to be nice, really I do, but you make everyone around you as bad as you."

"Look, Aster! It ain't my fault everything ain't the way you want it. I don't want you," he said, glaring at me. He looks away and puts his hands over his face. "Look, I don't know how to do this. Don't know how, man."

"Well, Winston, you better wipe that 'my-mother-just-got-shot-Bambi-helpless-don't-know-what-to -do' look from your face. Get your story straight, and if it's just a 'breaking hearts' tale, I don't want know part of it." I start walking towards the door, picking up my shoes and walking out barefoot. The barefoot part was probably not a smart idea cause the ground was covered in rocks and they were denting my feet.

"Aster, wait man!" he called after me. "Come back inside! Don't leave, man!"

I turn around and look at him coldly. "Why? What's the point? You just will keep taunting me and never come though. It's like a dog waiting for it's master to come back home, to be with him but he never does. The dog has to learn how to survive, turning mean and protective. It has to fend for itself, being cold and hating the world so she doesn't get hurt! But the dog will always ask itself what she did wrong! Why would my mother leave me here?!"

He runs, barefoot which would hurt like heck, and picks me up, adding more weight to his feet. He carries me back inside, me trying to escape his arms and he sets me on the couch. He looks at me, standing and sighs. "Look, Aster Rose, I am not your goddamn mother. I'm not going to leave but I don't know if I can stay. I don't want to hurt you man."

"Then I'll be the one to blame." I stand up. "We won't be together if that's what you prefer but we can be each other's favorite hoods. Would that be better?" I ask. He nods. "So will you be my hood, Dally?"

"Hell yeah." He hugs me and I hug back. "You think you can walk? Or at least go out?"

"Yeah, with shoes preferably. Where do you have in mind?"

"Windrixville."
