"What is this?" a voice booms. I immediately pull a blanket up around me and Dally puts his arm over me.
"Dad!?" I half scream and half question. "What are you doing here?"
"I heard you were in the hospital and came down as quickly as I could. The nurse said you were in here but I wasn't expecting this from you, young lady," he answers, anger in his voice. "And you!" He points to Dallas. "Get away from my daughter!"
"Um, Mr. Aster, I am currently naked so I don't think that'd be the best option," Dallas smirks, causing me to giggle.
"Get up!" Dad hollers. This time he isn't fooling around.
"Fine, man." Dallas stands up proudly and puts his hands on his hips. He notices me checking him out. "Enjoying the view, darling?"
"Don't you talk to my Aster that way," my dad snaps.
"Nothing she ain't seen before," he smirks.
"You two get your clothes on. I'll be standing outside the door."
"Whatever you say, your royal highness," Dally replies, curtsying. My dad sticks up his finger at him and leaves, closing the door behind him.
I am really tired. It's dark outside and the clock reads 12:37.
"Well, I think your dad is warming up to me," Dally says. He puts on some boxers and throws on some shorts the hospital provided. I grab my bra off the ground, careful to hold the blanket around me. I dress and throw my hair into a ponytail. "Let's do this again sometime."
"Not for a long time." I leave and rush to my room, hearing my dad's footsteps behind me. When we enter the room, I sit on my bed and ignore his gaze and stare at the sheets.
"What the hell was that?" my dad hollers.
"Nothing. It meant nothing," I say.
"Nothing?! You call having sex nothing? It's a big deal, Rose. You're only sixteen. I don't want you to be like your momma. A mother at sixteen. She should've gotten rid of you. If I become a grandpa then you can just leave Tulsa. I won't wanna see you again," he says harshly.
"That'd make you so happy, wouldn't it? You'd like me to leave, to get out of your hair, to not come back and you wouldn't have to care for a mistake. I'm sorry I'm not the perfect daughter you always wanted. I'm a bitch, I'm a trouble maker and I sure as hell ain't even gonna be a saint. I'm sorry, okay?" I spit. "I'm sorry that Mom left. It's all my fault."
"Your mom didn't leave because of you. She left because she was wild. She needed to leave Tulsa, to be free." He sits on my bed and hugs me, tightly and tears form in his eyes. "You have her spirit. You're free."
"Mom ain't ever gonna come back, is she?" I ask into his shoulder.
"No, not in our lifetimes. But I'm here, don't forget that. I'm gonna take care of you no matter what happens. I'm sorry about being a lousy dad. I'm gonna try harder. I promise. I love you, my little Rose."
"Yeah."

He isn't there when I wake up. It's 11:13. Even with all that sleep, my eyes feel warm and heavy. I sit up and wipe my eyes.
"Hey," Two Bit says, entering the room being followed by Ponyboy. He grins his cocky grin that makes everything okay. I love that about Two Bit, he can be funny and goofy and your drinking buddy, but he can be serious and be your best friend. "You all right?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Hey Pony," I say. He gives a small wave. "How is Soda and Darry?"
"They're okay. Soda and that Alex chick are really hittin' it off. After they saw her grandma, they got ice cream at Dilly's Dilly Bars. Darry bought me one too, so it was okay." I'm glad Soda was interested in Alex. I never really liked Sandy anyways.
