We walk away from the drive in after the movie is over. Two Bit is cracking Marcia up which is making me roll my eyes. I never liked rich people. They make me feel low and that I have to honor their presence.
I noticed a light coming from behind me and turned around. A car was trailing us. Shit. I knew these Socs were no good.
"Oh, look what's coming," Cherry said. We tried to keep on walking but we heard the doors slam shut.
I saw they were drunk and wanting a fight.
"Hey Cherry! What are you doing hanging around this trash?" the tall one said, getting out of the driver's seat.
The next few comments were a blur and the next thing I knew, I had my blade pulled out. Two Bit took out his blade too and gave a broken bottle to Ponyboy. He'll never use it. He's too innocent. Johnny was speechless.
"Alright! Alright! We'll go with you! Just hold on a second!" Cherry yelled at the tall Soc.
"Come on Cherry! We can take 'em!" Two Bit said bravely. I squeezed the handle of my blade.
"No! I hate fights! I hate them!" Cherry said. "Ponyboy, can I talk to you for a minute?"
Cherry and Ponyboy walked a few feet away. I couldn't make out what they were saying though.
"Why is a little girl with you?" tall Soc asked. "Little missy?" Two Bit had already put his blade away but I haven't. I started charging toward them with my blade held high but someone grabbed my waist and held me back. I tried to get free but another grabbed my blade away from me.
Johnny was the one who held me back. I would've killed those Socs. "Aster! What are you doing? Trying to get us killed?" Johnny said sharply. "Cut it out!" Two Bit held my blade and tucked it in his pocket next to his.
"Dammit Aster!" Two Bit said. "You ain't getting this back until they leave."
Cherry and Pony came back less than a minute later. Either they didn't see the chaos that just happened, or they are choosing to ignore it. Most likely the second option.
Cherry and Marcia left with their drunk boyfriends. For a second, I felt bad for them. They had to put up with drunks and pressure every single day of their rich lives. They can't date who they want, go where they want, or anything without watching their backs and worrying about scarring their reputations.
"Come on, guys," Two Bit says. "I have to get home and Ponyboy probably does too." He starts walking down the road, and the rest of us follow.
"This is depressing," I say when I catch up to Two Bit. "Do you wanna smoke?"
"Yeah. Let's have a competition on who can blow the biggest cloud," he replies, grinning.
I pull out a pack and hand one to Two Bit. "Hey, Pony, Johnny, do you wanna join?" They nodded and I have them each a stick. I forgot my lighter (I actually lost God knows where) and borrowed Johnny's.
"Okay, ready losers?" Two Bit laughed. We all inhaled and he held up his fingers, three, two, one, and we all blew. Ponyboy had by far the biggest puff.
"Pony, you make mine look crappy," I say to him, surprised.
"You just smoke like a girl," he replied and took off running. You better run, I thought and shot after him.
Behind me, I heard running thuds of Johnny and Two Bit's feet hitting the dirt road. Two Bit let out a whoop of joy and kept running. I felt a smile creep up onto my face and I ran even faster.
I caught up to Ponyboy and jumped on him. I tackled him to the ground and wrestled like we were both little kids. He pinned me down and laughed.
"You can't beat a greaser," he said. My legs were in between his (awkward) and his arms weren't going to let mine go free anytime soon.
