We parked the car about a mile from the church. Just to be safe is Dally's reasoning. It was dawn and everything was new. This was so much different than Tulsa. I've never been to the country before.
When I was twelve, my dad took me to Swansea, Illinois for a business trip. I made one friend there named Olive. She was really annoying but she could make anything hilarious. About a month later, we went back again and I found out she had moved. I went to her old house and this girl named Alex lived there. She was so innocent and loved everything. It kept me out of jail for two weeks. I'll never forget them.
The walk was uneventful and short. When Dallas described the old church, I envisioned a spooky-type place. Graveyards surrounding the base and crows would caw every time someone died.
The church was everything but my weird imagination. It was just an old, abandoned church with boards over the windows. A few cobwebs here and there but not scary.
Dally must've seen my surprised face. "Not what you though it was gonna be? Crows, graveyards and demons?"
"Not demons, but a few gargoyles here and there," I say as I step onto the porch.
"Oh wow," he mutters, smiling, following me onto the creepy porch which feels like it could break at any minute. That's one of my fears; to fall along with a short list; elevators, falling, spiders and losing someone.
We find an opening that hasn't been boarded up. He motions for me to go in first, but I motion for him to go first too. We continue this until I stick out my tongue and climb through the door.
Ponyboy was sleeping on a wooden bench, Johnny snoring in the one behind him. They both looked so young as they slept. I guess everyone does. I watch movies on tv and people wake up beautiful and handsome. But I wake up like I've been in Hurricane Katrina.
I notice something different about Pony but I can't put my finger on it.
The biggest spider in the world is climbing towards me on a wooden post. I shriek and run into another room. I may be tuff, but I refuse to have the eight legged, black, hairy and scary species within ten feet of me.
The room is dark, and filled with more crawling demons. There is a doorway which I assume leads outside. I go through it, and the view nearly takes my breath away.
The valley stretched out for miles. The sun was hovering above the ground and the flowers faced towards the rays. I felt like the queen of the world.
When I came back into the church, Dally and Johnny were talking and Pony was reading a piece of paper.
"What is that?" I ask Johnny, sitting down next to him.
"Soda wrote Pony a letter. Asked Dally to give it to him," he answered. I studied him for a second. He has lost weight and his eyes seemed to be more alert. His hair had been messily cut, but he could pull off the look.
I stand and go sit on Dally's lap. He looks at me, surprised.
"When did Soda give you that letter?" I ask.
"A few days ago. You were sleeping when he came over. You slept a lot during the past week," he replied.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I adjust myself.
"Cause I didn't know I had to, man." I roll my eyes. "Are you mad, baby?"
"No, I have no reason to be," I reply. I look to see if Johnny's looking (he ain't) and give Dally a quick kiss on the lips. "No reason at all."
Pony finishes reading the letter and looks over at me, Dally and Johnny. "So why'd you get hauled in Dal?"
"Shoot, kid, the boys at the station know me by now. I get hauled in for everything that happens on our turf." Dang, how long did I sleep? "While I was there, I kind of let it slip that you were heading for Texas. There looking down there now."
I chuckled. "You lying son of a gun." He laughed and said every curse word under the sun in a way of admiring himself.
"You sure can cuss good Dal," Johnny said smiling.
"Sure can," he announced proudly. "But all you better not pick up on my bad habits."
"Aw, shoot."
"I can't get over that hair, Pony. I just...," and Dal started laughing. That was what was different! His hair, which was now bleach blonde and had no grease. I felt stupid and decided to have some fun with it too.
"You look like one of them Barbie dolls they sell at stores for a dollar and twenty cents!" I hoot.
"At least I'm worth more than you! One of ya'll asters aren't even in them stores," Pony replied.
"Well my roses are worth at least six dollars each!" I laugh.
"Fine," he said, giving in. "I know I look lousy but don't rub it in."
_________
"Hello, welcome to Dairy Queen! My name is Moe, what would you like to order?"
We ate BBQ sandwiches at Dairy Queen. I just had a chocolate sundae. On the way here, Dally nearly killed us driving with no hands. I slapped him for it.
A little girl walked over to us. Dallas quickly put on some shades and kept his head low. Me, Johnny and Pony did the same. She asked us for a dime. Being as polite as a hood like Dal could be, he told her no and to go away. Just like kids always do, she kept asking. I couldn't take it.
"Get out of here, you little ass!" I explode. She shrieked and ran. I felt guilt instantly.
"Dang, Aster, you didn't have to do that," Johnny said.
"Don't get me wrong Johnny, I love kids. Before they can talk are the best ages," I reply. They all chuckled.
"Hey, I forgot to tell ya, we got us a new spy," Dally said. "That uh, Cherry girl."
"Wait, what?" I ask, surprised and nearly choking on my sundae.
"Yeah, me and the guys were hanging at the lot and she came up to us." The rest of the words blurred to me. I think I must've been really sick. I remember feeling sick the night of the drive in. That must've been the reason why I slept so much. Damn, I missed a lot.
"Did you know that Two Bit wanted to go to Texas to hunt for you?" I have a really bad attention span, so I didn't even know what they were talking about. "You think my dad gives a shy if I'm drunk or dead in a car wreck? That don't bother me none."
Johnny was different from Dallas. Dally had no emotions, except for caring for Johnny. I don't even think he really loved me. But Johnny had emotions. He wants his parents to ask about him, to actually care. Johnny Cade was just a boy. A boy that wanted his parents.
We drove back to the church. But it wasn't the same. It's was up in flames.
