Kahn woke during the night for a brief period of time as Joey snuggled into his side and stroked his chest. The young boy was completely out of it and his breathing relaxed and steady. Kahn gently stroked Joeys long dirty toffee brown hair back and hummed quietly without realising. He had grown quite content with Joeys prescence being by his side. The boy treat him like he did humans and for reasons Kahn couldn't understand it made his heart swell with pride. Watching the young boy sleep Kahn closed his eyes and fell back into a quiet slumber.

The morning started like any other and Kahns arms ached after plowing the field the day before. Hansel noticed that he was struggling and called him over. He noticed that Kahn eyed him warily and kept himself at arms distance in case Hansel tried anything.

"If you're hurting too much, take a break and rest up. Even you are human."

Kahn stepped back in surprise at the farmers words and looked away. Somewhere deep inside his heart ached painfully. Although it wasn't pleasant Kahn also found it was comforting.

"Human...?"

The farmer raised his brows and kept a firm gaze on the young man.

"Yes, human. You feel fatigue, happiness, loneliness and those are a few feelings amidst the many."

Kahn looked at Hansel and deep in the older mans eyes he could see that there was a depth of understanding. Gently kneading the back of his shoulder were cramp had started to settle in Kahn smiled slightly when Hansel told him to relax for the day.

"Then can I play with Joey?"

The farmer laughed at Kahns child like question and patted his shoulder.

"He's your friend isn't he? Go ahead."

Kahn felt his cheeks flush slightly and the young man looked to the floor scuffing his feet before deciding to go look for Joey.

Kahn located the boy near the back of the house underneath a giant oaktree. The boy was hunched over and reading a book, a bandana sweeping his untidy hair out of sight under a blanket of white. Kahn watched him as he walked behind the youngster, grinning when Joey looked up.

"Hansel said I could play with you."

Joey blushed slightly but closed his book after marking the page and stood up. His eyes were sparkling happily and his hand gently found Kahns.

"So what do you wanna do?"

Joey looked up at him and smiled shyly when he shrugged and suggested they could just sleep for a bit. For Joey that was fine by him, he liked being by Kahns side. Although they had offered Kahn a room indoors he had refused and asked for some where outside. Joey had found it mysterious but it really hadn't been that much of a challenge to find out why Kahn preferred it outside. He just simply preferred the scents outside.

"Do you like the hay?"

Kahn looked at Joey and smiled, his brown eyes twinkling with happiness.

"Yeah, it smells nice and it's warm during cold nights."

Joey blushed slightly and looked into the stables and shyly shuffled to Kahns bed. He liked sleeping beside the older boy because it made him feel grown up. Like he had the same special bond with Kahn that his parents had with one another. Joey had never believed he would grow old enough to find his special someone, ever since his childhood he had been severely ill. No friends came to visit him because Joey had always been too ill to attend school or go out into the town with his father.

But now he had Kahn by his side and he adored him. But it was more then just plain adoration, and deep inside Joey knew that.

"Are you okay?"

Joey jumped and span round, his lips a centimetre from Kahns chest. Bare chest. A beautifully bronze sculpted chest that could put a lifter to shame. Mentally slapping himself Joey looked Kahn in the eyes and nodded. The older boy seemed satisfied and flumped into the hay he had made his bed. Joey lay beside him nestling his head in the crook of the not so sullen faced boys neck. Kahn had a deep musky, earthy scent mixed with the light almost sandy smell of hay.

"How long will you stay with us?"

Joeys voice tremored at the end of his question and he closed his eyes as Kahn stroked the back of his neck lazilly with his fingertips. The Rottweiler didn't know the answer to that question. So he answered as honestly as he could.

"One day you may wake up and find I'm no longer here. I have my own precious family to piece back together again...yet...I'll come back here. I love the smells and sights..."

And though the words were never said, both males knew he would come back for Joey. It just happened to be that Joey never had to think about it for 5 changes of the seasons.
