Hey peeps! Chapter 27 is here, I hope you love it! Please forgive any mistakes as the majority of it was written late, late in the night. But feel free to point them out and make my editing job easier if you'd like :] I had a lot of fun writing this one, so I hope you have as much reading it!

Also, I plan to update again Sunday, and will do a shout out then - I've had some family visiting the last couple weeks so it's been hard to devote much time to any writing and reading.

Chapter 27

Focus. I repeat the word over and over in my mind as I look around the city. It's beautiful. And for months, it was home. I thought it would be home for a lot longer than that. It's a little hard to think that in mere hours it will be destroyed. It's kind of sad. From here I can see the building that I used to live in. I wonder if anyone else is living there now. In the place that Chase and I called home.

After double-checking that no humans are around, I unveil myself and turn to the vampire next to me. Chase stands, staring at the city before us that will be bustling with noise and activity in an hour or two. He studies it carefully as if each building is of extreme interest to him. He's doing his best to pretend that he didn't do something very sneaky and very nice for me and I'm doing my best to pretend it isn't his way of apologizing for having sex with me.

I guess I don't really care why it was that he helped me, the point is that he did. Chase snuck me into war when everyone else treated me like a delicate flower unequipped to handle it. The vampire Compelled an unsuspecting mage and got the poor girl to perform the spell that would mask my energy. He didn't say much to me the whole time other than to tell me to hide myself and so I went invisible. He held out a hand that I grabbed and led me to the meeting place where Arlo was preparing to drop Chase to the city.

If Arlo noticed the extra power requirement to get Chase here along with an invisible, well hidden, me he certainly didn't say anything. My guess is that he did notice. Very little gets by the mage. Plausible deniability, I assume, was his reasoning for pretending nothing was out of the ordinary with Chase's transfer.

"You coming to the White House?"

"Yes," I say fully intending to go wherever Chase goes. Besides, I wanted to be there to begin with.

"Good, let's go," he says.

"Now?" The attack isn't scheduled to begin for another four hours, at nine in the morning when everything is up and running.

"Yes, we need to be in there before the attacks begin if we want to have a chance at getting to Graham."

"Graham?" I ask speechless. "Like President Graham?"

"That's the one."

"Killing him won't look good."

Despite the fact that I think the man is a spineless coward and a complete failure as a person, even I realize that killing him won't help our cause.

"We aren't going to kill him. We're going to get information from him on the rest of the labs. Maybe Compel him a little."

"Who knows about this?" I ask coming to a stop. Chase keeps walking for several more paces before realizing I'm no longer in step with him and turning around.

"To my knowledge, Arlo."

"Why not my father? The council? Beckett?"

"You trust the council, love?"

I shake my head. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. Not a single one, except my father. The way they all reacted to the shifter attacks was suspicious enough and though they're powerful and have a lot of sway and I can acknowledge that we are lucky to have their support... I still don't know how worthy they are of trust.
