Chapter 28

"Nice house," Chase grunts as he tromps through the entryway not caring in the least about being quiet as he looks around the quite beautiful home.

"It belonged to a shifter."

Chase's gaze turns to mine, a curious glint in his eyes.

"Friend of yours?"

I snort out a laugh and close the door behind me.

"The opposite, actually. I killed him in attempt to prevent this very war. Anyway, we should be safe here. It's far enough from the main city that it won't be targeted in attacks and I don't think many people know where the house is, or would ever think I'd come here."

Chase hums in response, looking at for a moment before turning around and disappearing further into the house. I stand there for a moment, not really sure what to think of all of this and then force my feet to carry me to the living room. Chase must be somewhere else, exploring the house, because he is not in the living room with me. I don't give his absence too much thought and flop on the elegant sofa, not caring one bit that I'm probably bleeding all over the expensive piece of furniture. It's not like the owner is going to come home and complain.

I hear noises from a different part of the house and frown. Some sort of glass, a mirror maybe or a window, shatters following a loud thud. I'm not sure if Chase's destructive nature stems from the fact that we didn't get the information needed or because someone may have betrayed us. I don't blame him either way and sit quietly waiting for him to finish destroying whatever room he's deemed in need of a serious makeover.

Months ago, I would have gone and spoken with him, tried to calm him down before he hurt himself or something. I don't do that now though. Honestly, I'm not sure how receptive he would be to my help. Though I can tell he feels more for me than he claims to, he's resistant to trusting me in the way I know he wants to and so I don't think it would go over well if I dragged myself to him.

Exhausted, I let my body lean against a cushy pillow on the sofa and don't resist when my eyelids flutter closed. I can afford the quick power nap. Chase won't let himself freak out for too long and then he'll come and wake me up, ready to talk and hopefully to figure out what our next step is.

"Aurora," a gentle voice rouses me from my sleep. I blink my eyes open and let them close again, somehow feeling more exhausted than before letting myself sleep.

"You've got to wake up, love," he says again, gently shaking me.

This time when I pry my eyes open, I force them to remain that way. The view isn't so bad either. Chase's face is hovering above mine close enough that if I had the energy I could easily close the distance between us and kiss him. If I had the energy, I would. His concerned expression and the honest worry in his eyes makes me smile, because it reminds me of my Chase. He smiles upon seeing that I'm more coherent.

"You scared me," he admits quietly, almost sounding like he's embarrassed to say such a thing. Quickly, as if to cover up the words he just admitted, Chase clears his throat and masks his expression. "You're still bleeding."

I scrunch my eyebrows together. That doesn't make any sense. Sure, I used a lot of my power this morning, but I also prepared for such use and drank enough blood to make sure I would be covered. I should be healing fine. I wouldn't expect a miracle, but the bleeding should have at least stopped by now.

"The bullet must still be lodged in your shoulder, preventing the healing."

"Shit," I murmur. "Why didn't you get it out while I was sleeping?"
