Chapter 34
"You all," I turn to speak to the vampires, Carson, and the mages tied to them, "go straight to the fetal lab I showed you. Be ready for trouble, but remember we're signing a truce today, no deaths if you can manage. We're here to save not kill. Stick to disarming and disabling. Everyone else, straight to the nursery, we need to get the babies out now. That is your primary focus, I'll hold off any trouble."
Penny grabs onto me and before I know it we're in the nursery. The five cribs sit in the room just as I remember them and through a door into a much more sterile room are three more tinier cradle that are hooked up to machines. I hope that what we have in at the medical center will be enough to keep them alive. Instantly, I hear the crying or cooing of the infants from their cribs and nearly collapse to the floor with relief. Chase's text has me concerned that they would have all been relocated at best.
I pull Penny along to the crib I last saw Linc lying in so sweetly, excited to see him once again. Even if I know Penny will take him from me just as quickly, I at least know he'll be completely safe. And unlike before, we'll only be apart for a couple of hours. My heart stops to see that the crib is empty.
Empty.
"Where is he?" I ask no one in particular because no one in this room will know any better than me. "Where is he?" I ask again. My heart pounding furiously against my chest as if it's trying to escape the bone encasing it. Pushing back from the empty crib I move to each of the other cribs before the mage's can reach inside and pluck the innocent babies to safety.
Linc isn't in any of them.
My hands fly to my head, fingers thread through my hair on the verge of ripping it all out. Water fills my eyes as I spin anxiously around the room looking for any sign of the only infant I really care about.
"Rory..." Penny's worried voice catches my attention. I turn to face her but am barely able to focus on her through the water blurring my vision. She steps forward and reaches up, pulling one of my hands down and threading her fingers through it quickly. "We'll find him."
Numb, I nod. We could search this place for hours and not uncover every room. The rest of the mage's have left and without the cooing and baby noise, the room has become eerily silent. Penny and I walk through the door that held the infants who needed medical aid to survive. It's set up so that it could easily be a lab in and of itself.
The machines in the room are still beeping, alerting someone to the fact that their occupants are no longer inside. It won't be long, I imagine before someone rushes in to check on the alarms. The room isn't large, just enough for the machines and a small exam table. Linc doesn't occupy any of it.
"It's ok. There's another door," Penny calls my attention to a door on the opposite side of the room. It could be nothing, but we rush for it anyway. My hand wraps around the handle and twists hard, but it doesn't budge. I pull back and frustrated kick my foot into the bottom of the door.
When I realize it has no finger print scanner or number pad security code, I wrap my fingers tightly around again and, using every bit of strength, twist until the knob gives way. The metal crunches in my hand and the door pops open. Revealing a closet. A fucking closet.
Forcing myself to pause, I pull in a deep breath and clear my head enough to think more clearly.
"Where could he be?" I murmur aloud wondering where they may have taken him. Why he isn't in his crib when all the other infants were. In this maze of rooms I have no way tell which way he could be. I have no way.
