Chapter 3

Outside is bright, so bright it takes a moment for my eyes to adjust. When they do, I’m more surprised than I thought. I don’t know where I thought we were, maybe in the bottom of some building in DC… I’m not really sure. But I didn’t expect this. We’re in a desert.

This is obviously some sort of military installation, but otherwise I doubt anything is near by. It’s not much quieter out here, a loud siren, similar to a tornado warning sounds across the base. Troupes of men in uniform surround the building we just exited, weapons trained on us.

I know they can’t see us, not even a little, but if they decided to start firing, we’re fucked. Black SUVs and police cars are driving toward us, sirens blaring. We need to get the hell out of here before they start shooting.

Maybe it’s crazy, but I was kind of hoping that we would have a little back up here. I mean, someone got those doors opened. Someone is helping us, unfortunately… they aren’t here.

Grabbing the man I’m with, I start walking. They’ve done a good job at keeping us barricaded, but we have the advantage of being invisible. All we need is a hole to get through. Calculating what I need to do, I left my voice through the Glamour and whisper to my fellow escapees.

“I’m gonna make a hole, the second it’s there start running. I’ll be right behind you.”

“Just how the hell do you plan on making a hole?”

“Fae,” I say, but I might as well be saying duh. It’s pretty self explanatory.

I’m not entirely sure I can keep us Glamoured while trying to push Illusions on so many men. I’m not aiming to get them all out of commission, just ten or so, enough to make a wide hole and distract the soldiers while we get through it.

I get the feeling he’s ready to argue with me. Probably some misguided sense of manly duties. But he surprises me when he agrees and wishes me luck. I focus on a group of men in front of us and then to cause as much chaos as possible, I push out the Illusion that everyone around them is a Supernatural. Quickly, men are jumping back and aiming weapons at one another. Those unaffected are trying to talk down the men who are now attacking those within their ranks.

The distraction works as well as planned and we run through the hole. We barely make it through when weapons start firing. The men I’ve trapped in my mind games have opened fire on their comrades, those they think are Supernaturals. Screams and shouts of fear ring out so loud I’m tempted to cover my ears and block out the sounds of panic I’ve created. Chaos is what I wanted, and it’s what I got. I didn’t think they’d shoot each other though.

I don’t have time to think about the moral ramifications of my actions. We are in the clear and I’m not going to miss this opportunity. One of the black SUVs sits unattended with its doors still open, just far enough away from the crowd that I don’t hesitate checking it out.

Quickly, I change the Glamour so that the man and I look like two of the uniformed men. I hide Penelope in his Glamour, but I can feel myself getting weaker, loosing energy. I won’t be able to keep this all up much longer. Quickly I climb into the car and heave a sigh of relief to see the keys still in the ignition.

“Get in,” I tell the man.

I climb into the drivers seat and pull away from the curb the car has been haphazardly parked next to. I keep it slow and casual looking, I don’t want to draw attention our way by screaming out of here. As soon as we’ve pulled away I drop the Illusion, unable to hold both it and our Glamour any longer. And the Glamour is more important, at least until we get out of this place.
