Chapter 35
When my eyes open to the familiar waiting room of our little medical center, I breathe easy for the first time in a week... maybe in a year. Looking around I see each of the mages caring for the infant in their possession as we wait. The ones on life support obviously needed to be taken care of first, so I sit down in a chair and do something I never in a million years thought I'd be able to do. I inhale the scent of my son and revel in the simple fact that he mine and he is here, curled in my arms.
His eyes peek awake and gaze up at me. I wonder if he can tell. If he knows who I am to him in the way I instinctively knew who he was to me. It's probably a silly thought; to think an infant can know I'm his mother when he's only ever seen me once before, but I swear he does.
It's a strange thing for me to consider... being someone's mother. I haven't got a clue what I'm supposed to do with this little creature looking so innocently up at me. Even though I'm inexperienced and ill prepared and have no idea what to expect, I know I would do anything for Linc. Anything. And that, I hope, is enough.
"He's really cute," Penny whispers next to me.
"Yeah," I agree. "He really is."
The waiting room slowly empties as the doctors take the infants back and the mages trickle away. Unlike me, they aren't actually tied to the babies they rescued. They've done their job and made sure they made it to safety. The infants will be cared for here by the nurses and doctors until proper homes can be found.
"Aurora," Dr. Williams says eventually. Penny waves goodbye and heads back to her room to get some rest or food. I follow him back to the exam room. "It seems this day went well," he says happily. "We needed it to be a good day."
"It almost didn't." I don't bother to elaborate.
"Well, let's see the little fellow. Does this one have a name?"
"He's Linc," I tell him reluctantly passing him over to the doctor.
"Vampire and fae. It will be interesting to see which traits he follows. Vampire I suppose, since it's the greater part of his DNA. But you never know."
He goes about a fairly quick exam of Linc. Weight. Length. Listening to his heart and lungs. He feels at his joints and stomach. He looks in his mouth and nose and ears. Linc cooperates much better than I did in my first check up with Dr. Williams. Dr. Williams, for his part, seems to genuinely enjoy working with infants. He makes funny faces and smiles wide when he earns a little laugh from Linc.
"He seems to be in good health. All of them do. I don't think you have to worry about that, Aurora. These infants were their prize possessions and were treated significantly better than adults and children. I wouldn't complain if he put on a little more weight though. And I'm sure this won't be an issue, but though they were well fed, these infants do not know love like they should. Do not be concerned with spoiling him with attention, at this point he needs all the affection and care he can get."
"He's ok, then?"
"He's more than ok. I won't need to keep him for any further observation, but I would like to see him next month to check on his progress."
"We'll be leaving soon."
"Find a good Supernatural physician." He smiles. "Or a mage that can transport him to me for visits."
With a smile I take Linc back into my arms and wish Dr. Williams a good evening before leaving. On my way out, I glance at the clock. Chase should be back by now. They were expected to take a while because signing paper work always takes a while, but Arlo didn't expect to be gone past dinner. Figuring he probably got sucked into a debriefing or celebratory drink, I decide to head to where they might be.
