Chapter 6
(I know this one is another short chapter, but I promise, the chapters are going to start getting longer after this one. ps Merry Christmas)
Penelope shakes me awake sometime later, the sun is out and both she and Jackson look well rested. They also look nearly healed, unlike me. But I was injured far worse, between the scraps, shoulder and hand. I spent too much energy keeping us Glamoured all night and besides that, the lack of food and blood is seriously slowing down my healing.
“He said we should let you sleep,” Penny says. “So we’ve been waiting.”
I look up to Jackson and smile gratefully. “Thanks.”
He nod in acceptance.
“Did you talk to Chase again,” I ask Penny.
The girl nods. “He said a lot of really bad words,” she whispers.
“Yeah, I thought he might. But did he say anything else.”
“Oh. Yes,” she announces suddenly as if just remembering herself. “He promised he was going straight to your dad when he wakes up and they will fight the council to the death if they need to, to find us,” she says the words slowly like she’s trying to be sure to get them right and leave nothing out.
“And he said he loves you,” she rolls her eyes at love in only the way a small child can. “And you are strong and you can do this.”
I smile able to imagine Chase saying that in a way that would make me believe it. Hearing it second hand doesn’t have quite the same effect. Careful of the hand I smashed last night, I stand suck in a breath. Every inch of me is sore. I feel like how really old decrepit people look.
“Jackson, you think you can still get us to that water?”
I’m not sure exactly how far we moved last night, but I hope it was in the direction of water.
“I can do you one better,” he says with a wide smile and then points to the sky. Yesterday there wasn’t a cloud to be seen, but today they’re scattered here and there. They probably wont rain, but that won’t matter Jackson can theoretically pull the moisture down to us in the form of drinkable water.
“Oh, thank God.”
Penelope and I watch in amazement as the small cloud nearest us begins to compact, smaller and smaller until it turns into a bubble a of water. It’s not huge but it’s definitely enough to keep us going this morning. Jackson brings the water down to us and splits it into three smaller bubbles.
“Drink up,” he says and then starts to slurp water from his bubble. Penelope and I quickly do the same. It’s hard to pace myself and not drink too much at once because the water on my dried cracked lips is nothing short of bliss. When we’ve had our fill he joins the water back together and lets it hover over his shoulder.
“I’ll bring it with us, but I think we’ll be ok for the day, there are enough clouds in the sky that I don’t think water will be the problem.”
“I could kiss you right,” I tell him.
“Do you kiss everyone?” Penelope says scrunching up her face and Jackson laughs.
“About what I said last night,” I say to him feeling a little awkward but knowing I should apologize. “I was out of line.”
Jackson waves off the apology. “Tension was high. It was life or death and you were doing your best. Don’t worry about it.”
