Chapter 21

I fall back onto the bed and into Chase’s arms with a deep sigh. We’re both exhausted and finally able to enjoy the first moments of real peace in two and a half weeks. Every day has been spent up at the asscrack of dawn training. Chase and I have been kicking our own asses as hard as we push the recruits who I’m sure go to sleep fantasizing unique and fun ways to kill us. I would.

My dad was able to convince the council to offer their limited help. So they’ve spent the afternoons with us, working with each of their own to hone in on unique powers. I think they finally understand the gravity of what the humans are doing and what we must do. But they’re the council, they don’t like to actually get their hands dirty. It’s beneath them, I guess. I’ll take what we can get though, their guidance and knowledge is important but their support is crucial. Knowing the council is on board gave confidence to all the volunteers in a way we couldn’t.

Aine was the first to cross. A couple of days after my display of power with Chase’s parents, she cornered me in the hall to tell me how impressed she was and offer to help me control it. She’s likely the only fae that can keep up with me. I don’t know if she’s as strong as I, but she has excellent control of her power and that goes a long way. So, we have been working together so that I can learn to use that level of power in a more stable emotional state. I’ve enjoyed working with her and at the same time, I’ve never been more mentally worn out. I didn’t know my brain could hurt from overuse, but it can. It does.

Evenings, after the training has ended for the day and all of our volunteer army has been sent, aching and sore, to bed, a group of six of us still has work to do. We spend our evenings – and sometimes so late into the night it could almost be called morning – planning the attack. It’s a lot more complicated than I would have expected. I never knew just how much goes into planning an attack. Topher and Carson drew a layout of the labs in Oklahoma. And then argued about it and redrew it. And again. After about a week they finally agreed their map was as close to blueprints as we were going to get. Meanwhile the rest of us discussed cities and plans of attacks. Everything down to each persons position around the city has been carefully decided.

But all that’s done now. Everyone was given the afternoon off and there’s a huge meal prepared and there will be music and dancing until too late into the night. And they should be, everyone should attempt to enjoy their night. Tomorrow when the sun goes in down in Oklahoma, we attack.

“I love you,” I tell Chase.

I snuggle closer into him and his lips press to my temple in a sweet kiss.

“We can go down to the party,” he says.

“Uh-uh.”

I scrunch of my face in distaste. Going up to the party means spending our evening – what could possibly be our last evening together – with a mass of sweaty, dancing, drinking Supernaturals who will be trying to make the most of the night. It does not sound like a good time. Chase chuckles at the expression on my face, but I know he feels the same way I do. Chase makes me look like a super outgoing people person. If we joined in on the festivities he would be more miserable than I would.

“What do you want to do?”

I sit up with a grin on my face and wiggle my eyebrows excitedly. Chase has made promises and since there’s a chance we don’t come back from this mission, I intend to make him keep his promise tonight. Chases eyes widen.

“Love,” he says with a tired smile. “I going to need like a ten minute cat-nap if you expect me to do that.”

I stare at him for a second before it hits me that he seriously misinterpreted my excitement. I laugh a loud, tired laugh. Not that I wouldn’t seriously enjoy spending the next several hours in bow-chica-wow-wow-ville, but I had something that involved a bit less movement in mind.
