"No." I whispered and started running "RUN!" I screamed to Simon as the demon grabbed my arm and scratched me or something but I grabbed Simon while still running and the demon let go and was stabbed by Jace who quickly caught up to us. "You killed two cops!" Simon screamed, "They weren't cops." Jace replied "Let's go!" he said and we all started running through the rain. I suddenly stopped running and collapsed to the ground, hyperventilating and crying. Jace came to my side and knelt next to me with his hand on my shoulder. "Courtney, you can't stay here forever. They'll find you." he said "How could Luke just say that he didn't care?" I cried, "I've known him for as long as I can remember. He used to read to me every night before bed and he used to pick me up from school for years." I breathed heavily "Look, maybe those memories aren't real." Jace said and I stopped crying. All the emotion left my body as soon as he said those words.
"Do you remember what I told you, sweetheart? You can't trust anyone." Jace shook his head "No, I have to find my mom! I have to go!" I yelled and tried getting up but he grabbed my shoulders and pulled me back down. I put my hands on his wrists as he spoke to me "Listen to me, we'll figure this out but not here. Not right now. We need to get you to a safe place." he said, just mere inches from my face. "I'm a shadow hunter, Courtney, and I will protect you with my life." Jace looked into my eyes and we suddenly heard Simon yelling. "There you guys are! I thought you were right behind me! I thought I lost you guys!" Simon yelled while Jace grabbed my shoulders tighter and brought me to my feet. "Okay." I said as I took a deep breath "I'll follow you." I said to Jace "Are you sure about that? He killed two cops!" Simon yelled as we started running again "Yeah, they weren't cops." Jace said to Simon. We ran until we reached the subway. We got on and I leaned against a rail as Simon and Jace talked. "They looked like real cops to me." Simon said, "Well, they weren't." Jace replied.
"So where did they get the car?" Simon asked after having a mini-meltdown "They weren't real cops." Jace repeated. After getting off the subway we followed Jace to what looked like an abandoned building "You'll be safe in here." he said, "What is this dump?" Simon asked, "This isn't a dump. You just...can't see it." I spoke as a castle began forming in front of my eyes. We walked inside and as the door closed it locked too. I looked around and began stumbling backward from feeling so lightheaded "SHIT!" Simon squealed as both Simon and Jace caught me and lowered me to the floor. "What the hell is going on? What are they doing in here?" a man asked. Jace leaned over me and grabbed my arm, ripping my shirt and jacket and looking in a panic. "It's a demon bite." Jace said. "Jace! Do something!" Simon yelled as I took a few short breaths. "Is this the part where you start tearing off pieces of your shirt to bind my wounds?" I looked up at Jace "If you wanted me to take my clothes off, you should've just asked." Jace raised an eyebrow and took the same tool from before and put it to my arm. I slowly drifted off.
When I opened my eyes, both Simon and Jace were right in front of me. "Hey. Hey, she's waking up!" Simon smiled and looked at Jace. When I moved my gaze toward the carvings and designs in the walls, Jace came into my view, staring down at me. I looked down at my arm and started sitting up. I seethed as I brushed my finger over the wound. "I Passed out you guys tattooed me? Thought that only happened in Vegas." I chuckled "It's not a tattoo." Jace said "It's a rune." Simon said excitedly, "They have 'em for everything. They make 'em invisible...strong, they heal, they also make you visible. That's why I suddenly see him. Even if you're hungry--" Simon explained but was stopped "No." Jace shook his head. "The fact that the rune had an effect on you explains why you can see us." Jace explained. "I don't...get it." I spoke "Mundanes can't endure the process, the rune is too powerful for them. Now we definitely know you've got some shadow hunter blood in you." Jace said, "Wait, it wasn't definite before?" Simon asked Jace "Well it became definite when she didn't die." Jace turned to Simon as a woman walked up to the bed I was on and dropped some clothes onto it. "Here, see if these fit." she said.
"It's not every day we get newcomers in here. Especially not girls." she said with an accent almost as strong as Jace's. I sat up and picked up the clothes. "Shouldn't we just call the cops? You know the real cops?" Simon asked Jace as they turned their backs and I propped up a curtain to change. "That's a great idea, I don't know why we haven't thought of that for the past 1,000 years." Jace said, sarcastically. "Hodge wants to meet her in private." a man walked down the stairs as I adjusted my jacket and walked out of the curtain "Who's Hotch?" I questioned, "He's in charge. He runs the Institution." the man said. "Okay, let's go." I shrugged and wiped the blood from my face with a provided towel.
