I watched as Alec angrily walked away and I continued to gasp for air. After a minute or two I took a deep breath and walked down to the medical corridor where Simon would be. When I got there, I pulled up a chair at the foot of the bed and picked up one of the empty sketchbooks from the shelf, and began sketching a picture of Jace. It wasn't totally obscure but he was shirtless. It was Jace with wings behind him. I finished drawing one of the tattoos when Simon woke up. "hey." he waved and sat up "How long was I out?" he asked, "All day. Uh here, I found your glasses." I reached into my pocket and handed him his glasses. "One of the lenses cracked." I told him and smiled as he put on the busted-up glasses. He put them on and took them off a few times. "Hm...that's weird. I don't seem to need them anymore." he said and I raised my eyebrows and nodded "Cool?" I spoke.

"So...what're you drawing?" he asked, and I smiled a little. "Hm...nothing." I said as I closed the sketchbook and got up to set it on the table next to Simon. I sat down on the bed next to him and what I didn't know was that Jace was standing in the doorway watching. "So you're okay now?" I asked, "Yeah, it was so crazy." Simon said and I chuckled, Jace then turned around and left. "I'm sorry I didn't believe you before." Simon said as I took a cloth and wiped some of the residue off of his arm "Now I get it." he said and I lightly tapped his nose with the towel "Mmm." I nodded "And...and I must've passed out..." he began but as I cleaned his arm, I looked and saw two punctures. Bite marks. "And then you showed up. See, I've always been the one who needed you more than you needed me." Simon told me as I looked back up at him "That's not true." I told him "Yes it is but I never cared." he spoke and I held his hand.

"I've only ever had my mom, Luke, and you. Don't ever imagine that you aren't important to me. Okay?" I assured Simon "Okay." he smiled "Okay." I smiled back. He began mumbling but turned his head and started snoring. I looked at the doorway and took my hand away from Simon's before getting up and walking toward a sound I heard. I walked into the library and saw Jace playing the piano and then angrily smashing the keys when he messed up a note. "Woah..." I smiled "What did that piano ever do to you?" I asked as Jace stared at the music. "You play it like you've lost your only love." I leaned on the large piano "Unfortunately, my one true love remains myself." he spoke, "Well at least you don't have to worry about rejection." crossed my arms "Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally just to keep it interesting." he shrugged his shoulders.

"You do play that with a lot of passion." I nodded "Well that's the problem, I play it with too much emotion. It's supposed to be played with a simple representation of notes, no interpretation." he said and I walked behind the piano and sat on the bench next to him. "Music is supposed to have emotion." I looked at him as his eyes trailed my face and then my body then the piano. "Demons react to certain frequencies when two tones cross. Drives them crazy." he said as he began to play a few notes. "See, Bach discovered this and turned it into a system using a mathematical progression of tonal combinations that allows us to expose demons." Jace said and I looked behind him at the painting of Bach "So bach was a Shadowhunter?" I asked, "Yes." Jace replied as I say the runes in the painting "So Bach is to demons what garlic to vampires?" I looked at Jace. "Kind of." he tilted his head a bit "I mean you can run out of garlic but you can't run out of music." he looked into my eyes while speaking.

"Is that where you keep all your toys?" I asked as I looked at a stone and then back at Jace who was smiling at me "It's way more fun." he nodded "Come on." he nudged my shoulder as he stood up and I followed him "It's a portal. Like the Bermuda triangle, it's naturally open. The Institute was built around it." Jace explained, "Some people say that the Institute was the first building in New York." Jace pointed to a painting "Huh..." I said as he opened the portal "It's a bit difficult to explain." he told me "The portal can take you wherever you want to go in this dimension." he walked closer to me as the doors opened and revealed a blue light. "So whenever you break that surface, you are transported to wherever you would like." Jace explained "So that means my mom-- I ran to the door but Jace stopped me "Wait!" he grabbed my arm "We spent our entire life, trained on how to use it, visualizing where it will take us before we step into it. It takes incredible focus." he said as I stuck out my finger and poked the surface of the portal.
