"If you were to step into it without the proper training, you could end up in limbo." Jace said as he gently walked me away from the portal "Lost. In your own mind...forever." Jace looked down at me and I looked up at him then at my reflection in the portal. "Let me show you." Jace put his hand on my shoulders and turned me around while we walked back up the stairs "Come on." he said as he let go of my shoulders and walked back down the stairs "No peeking." he said and I smiled before turning around. I looked back for a second and saw Jace walking up to me with a bubble. He put it next to my head and then walked back to the portal as I looked at the bubble in confusion. As I continued to stare at the bubble I saw Jace's hand come through the bubble and I turned my head a bit and felt him caress my hair. I smiled as he moved my hair behind my ear. As he removed his hand, the bubble remained.

"Pretty cool, isn't it?" he smirked at me and then closed the door, then the bubble popped. "Now you and I...have a birthday to celebrate." he said as I looked at him with a little smile "How did you know?" I asked, "Research...when I was trying to find you." he walked up the stairs and quickly looked down at me before walking away and motioning for me to follow him. He led me through the Institute without saying a word. "Nobody ever comes up here anymore." he suddenly spoke "So we have this all to ourselves." he led me into a majestic room, filled with plants and flowers. "This is...breathtaking." I said as we walked inside. I saw a beautiful butterfly in front of me so I stuck out my finger and to my surprise, it actually landed on it and then flew away. I looked next to me to see Jace carving the top of an apple off and sticking a candle in it. When he lifted it up, the candle lit and I smiled at him "Sorry there's no cake." he handed me the apple "Well I was expecting nothing so...this is great." I held the apple in my hands and smiled at Jace. "Well everyone should get something for their birthday." he began walking away while speaking. I chuckled and walked up the twisting staircase.

"What did you get?" I asked, "Weapons mostly." Jace spoke as I sat down on the top stair and set the apple down. "I'm sure that doesn't surprise you." Jace chuckled and I smiled "At this point, nothing really does." I looked at him with a smile still plastered on my face. Jace knelt down on one of the stairs and had his arm on the railing "When I was nine...my father gave me a falcon and told me to make it obedient. I was supposed to keep the bird blind but I couldn't bring myself to do it." he looked at me while speaking "Instead, I touched and stroked its wings until it trusted me. I tamed it to perfection. I took it to my father, expecting him to be proud...for what I'd done. He said...I told you to make it obedient...instead you taught it to love you, you didn't tame it, you broke it. And he took the bird and broke its neck. I cried all night and I never cried again." Jace looked away and he fidgeted his fingers "Did you ever forgive him?" I asked, "He did it to make me stronger." he said and I looked at the ring on his hand that was resting on my knee. I picked up his hand and examined the ring.

"Does that stand for Wayland?" I asked, and he looked at me and nodded as a clock chimed. "Midnight." he said as he looked back at me. "Watch this." he told me as I stood up from the seat and saw all the closed flowers open. I could see Jace smiling at me out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head to look at him as my hand remained in his. He opened his other hand to reveal light from a rock. I looked at him and then back at his hand. "When a girl says she wants a big rock, she doesn't literally mean a big rock." I smiled as I took the rock from his hand "Every Shadowhunter should have their own light." Jace said as I took the rock in my hands and he looked up at me and moved his face closer to me and closed his eyes as a crow squawked. "We have company." I said as I looked at the crow and then back at Jace.

"That's Hodge's bird. We should probably go." Jace looked back at me. We scanned each other's faces and then I rolled my eyes as he walked away with my hand still in his. He led me down the stairs and on the last step I tripped and Jace grabbed my waist and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders. I looked into his eyes and he suddenly moved his head forward and kissed me. I put my hands in his hair and on his cheek. He moved his hands from my waist to my back and our mouths and bodies moved in synch. In the middle of the make-out session, it began to pour rain. We both smiled into the kiss as Jace nodded "Yeah..." he smiled "We should definitely go now." he said as we both laughed and covered our heads with our arms.

Back in Simon's room, he was getting out of bed and knocked over the sketchbook and revealed the sketch of Jace. He picked up the book and stared at it.
