For several months I lived on the road with my kids. I got a burner phone, but I didn't bother putting in any familiar numbers because I didn't want any ties back to the mess that were the Winchesters. Of course, it was difficult taking care of them both on my own. Especially since the bigger Zeppelin got, the more he looked like his father. And of course, Maddie had the eyes to complete the look. Part of me felt guilty Dean was missing all the firsts.
Then I would think of what he said that night on the phone when he thought Bobby was dead and I'd remember why I ran off in the first place. Everything changed one day when I caught a glimpse of one particular news story. Actually, it was Maddie who drew my attention to it.
I was cleaning up some of the toys in our motel room, not really paying attention while Zep was playing in his pen we'd gotten him when Maddie called over to me.
"Mommy, Daddy and Uncle Sammy are on the TV."
"What?"
I stopped what I was doing, a toy in each hand, as I walked over to get a better glimpse of the screen. It was playing footage from what looked like a bank robbery from a couple days earlier. I watched slackjawed as Dean made direct eye contact with the camera, winked, and then both brothers opened fire on the people in the bank. Immediately, I dropped the toys and rushed forward, turning off the TV.
"Mommy, why-?" Maddie started.
"I don't know, darling," I shook my head. "Keep an eye on your brother, okay? I'm going to make a phone call."
The three-and-a-half year old nodded seriously as I stepped just outside, leaving the door open a crack as I took out my phone and dialed the number I swore never to call ever again.
"Hello?"
"Tell me you and that brother of yours didn't open fire in a bank two days ago."
"Ellie? Is that you?" Dean asked.
"Dammit, Dean. Tell me you and Sam didn't open fire in a bank two days ago and it was just a couple of monsters impersonating you."
"What are you talking about?"
"Have you seen the news?"
"The news?" Dean repeated lamely.
"Ugh, channel 8. Though, news this big, I'm sure it's playing on other channels, too. I mean, apparently the Winchester brothers are back and at it again."
"The hell are you talking about."
"Watch the footage, Dean. Then you'll know what I'm talking about."
There were some voices in the background as Dean communicated with I assumed Sam and then he swore into the phone.
"Damn it, that's not good."
"You think? What are they? Shifters? I didn't see a camera flare."
"That's because they aren't shifters. They're Leviathans," Dean explained.
"Leviathans?! They can impersonate other people now?"
"Yeah, apparently if they get some DNA from you they can morph into you. Shit, we gotta take care of this."
"Where are you guys? I'm going to come help."
"No, Ellie, you stay away. You and the kids are safe and it needs to stay that way. And look, about what happened that night-"
"Don't worry about that right now," I shook my head. "Just keep me updated, alright? And as soon as you take care of this doppelganger problem, I am coming back no matter what you say."
