Madelyn got out of her car quickly and went up the stairs of her apartment building quickly and opened the door to see Lincoln on the couch. He quickly stood up and walked up to Madelyn while she closed the door without breaking eye contact with him.
He didn't say anything, he just hugged her and she hugged him back. After a few seconds, he stepped back and looked at her.
"I'm sorry" Lincoln was always like that, he apologized for things that weren't his fault. Madelyn hated people like that until she met him.
"For what?" Madelyn questioned
"I tried to fight, I did, but after some time everyone was dead or taken, Afterlife was gone, there was nothing to fight for, so I ran" Lincoln was ashamed of running of course but the thing Madelyn mostly noticed was the survivor guilt, fucking profiling, she sometimes hated it.
"It's okay, you did what you had to do" Madelyn stepped closer and put a hand on his chest and he looked at her.
He put one hand on the side of her face and leaned towards her. Lincoln slowly kissed her and then moved his head backward. She just stared at him for a moment.
Just for a second she wasn't Madelyn Moon, the profiler of the BAU. She was just Maddie. She was 20 again fooling around with Lincoln, partying with Freddy, playing cards with Harper. For a second her world hadn't fell apart, Afterlife was okay, everyone was safe. But that wasn't true, and a kiss would not solve anything.
"You should rest... go to sleep, second door to the left" Madelyn said
Lincoln just stepped back and followed Madelyn's orders. Madelyn just looked at him while he walked away and then stared at the empty hall once he entered the room. She grabbed her computer and placed it on the table. After pressing a few keyboards, all the cameras inside the apartment shut down.
She went to the office in her home and grabbed a key from her pocket, with which she opened a drawer. Inside there was a little book and she opened it. On the first page, there were 2 names, each with a phone number next to them. She grabbed her phone and dialed both numbers only for her heart to break more when none responded to the call. She then eliminated the numbers from her history. Madelyn then proceeded to turn the cameras back on.
The morning later Lincoln came out of the room to see Madelyn in the kitchen making herself some tea. Then his eyes trailed to the couch he had waited on for her the night before.
"You know we could have slept in the same bed, it wouldn't be the first time," Lincoln said almost proudly
Madelyn chuckled at his remark and turned around to meet his face. She was still wearing the same clothes as the day before.
"I have to get to work, but you can make yourself at home" Madelyn didn't want to leave him but she had to.
"You're leaving?"
"I have a job now, a good one, I can't stay... if you want something to eat I think I have... cereal maybe, and there's a pizza in the fridge. do not leave okay? The whole city is looking for you"
"Yes mom"
Madelyn smiled at him and walked past him to her room. After showering and changing she grabbed her things and went to the door.
"Maddie" Madelyn turned around to look at Lincoln and continued "thank you"
She smiled and closed the door behind her.
