Madelyn walked away from Spencer smiling but as the smile faded a tear fell down her face. As soon as she was out of his vision she dropped her phone in a trashcan nearby. She made her way to her apartment calmly on the outside but freaking out on the inside. Once she opened the door Lincoln came out of the kitchen looking at her confused.
Soon they left the department, taking absolutely nothing. They got into Lincoln's car, or rather the one he stole, and drove away. Madelyn was in the driver's seat just a little overspeeding. Common mistakes of serial killers, going too fast, suspicious, or too slow is even more suspicious.
There was a silence in the car, not the silence there was with Spencer, this was an uncomfortable silence. The type of silence in movies, but none of them were focusing on that, which may be the reason it was so present. Suddenly Madelyn looked down to see the gas level almost empty.
"Damn it"
"What?"
"Gas"
"We can't stop"
"We have to, they probably have half an hour to find out"
"Fine"
"Are you mad?"
"No, not mad, just, I told you, I told you not to trust them"
"Well, I do okay!... I still do, they aren't like the rest"
They did mean to discuss, but they didn't want to and they weren't mad at each other, it was just what they did when they were stressed and angry at themselves. It had always been that way.
Madelyn parked the car and started to pump the gas. After some time Lincoln got out of the car while Madelyn was putting gas on the car and he came toward her.
"I'm sorry"
"For what?"
"Losing your team, I know you were close with them"
"It's okay, it was going to happen sometime"
"You think we have time?"
"For gas? Yeah"
"No, for you to explain things to them, if they are as you said they were they might understand"
"They, um they called you a monster"
"Okay" Lincoln leans over the car and Madelyn looked at him "been called worse, you've called me worse" Madelyn laughed
"Crap" as she finally noticed the camera looking at her and she pulled out her phone and the camera shut off "we have to go"
Once they were in the car again the silence was more present. More unnerving. They had been driving for about 2 hours when somebody finally said something.
"Harper and Freddy, we have to get to them," Madelyn said
"That's where we are going?"
"No, we have to get them out of our backs first, we are going to my safe house in West Virginia"
"You have a safe house?"
"Plenty"
"... Alisha"
"What?"
"We have to get her too"
"Of course" Madelyn kept looking forward expressionless
"Hey" Lincoln grabbed Madelyn's chin and she looked at him for a second and then back to the empty road "it's gonna be okay" as a response Madelyn just sighed
It was hours before they reached the house. It was small and a bit dirty but the closest neighbor was 10 minutes away. Lincoln stared at the house while Madelyn parked the car. When she walked toward him he didn't even look at her.
"Cozy"
"It's the closest one"
"I would have taken a couple of hours more for something more city-like"
"Come on"
Madelyn struggled a bit to open the door but when she did it was not horrible. The windows were closed and with curtains covering them which made little sunlight come in. But there was a comfortable couch in front of an '80s tv. A little kitchen that Lincoln hoped was full of food and Madelyn hoped it hadn't gone bad. Two doors, probably one was a bathroom so only one room. Madelyn walked towards the kitchen and opened a drawer to take out a computer. Lincoln just sat on the couch and he stood and then walked towards Madelyn and just looked at her.
"What?"
"What's the plan? We can't stay here our whole lives"
"No, but we have to stay here some time, look for the others, Gordon, Harper, Alisha, Freddy, and everyone else who escaped"
"Okay, how long?"
"I don't know we have to move regularly and inconsistently"
"Until when?"
"It calms down"
"You know that's not going to happen. They probably think I am controlling you or threatening you, they are not going to stop, and there is also the electrical factor"
"They will have to at some point"
Lincoln then realized she didn't mean the ATCU she met her team, as soon as the team stopped looking for her they would move, she didn't care about the ATCU, she knew that the only people could find her were this team, her family.
The silence was there again. Lincoln went around the table to see what Madelyn was doing on her computer. She was deleting every piece of her existence on the web, fingerprints gone, ID badge gone, social media gone, registered foster homes gone, everything that isn't physical or memory was gone permanently. Lincoln watched Madelyn expressionless once again, she was either taking this well or horribly.
...
Soon it was night. The sun had set and Madelyn couldn't believe this all happened in one day. Lincoln was on the couch sleeping while Madelyn stepped to the bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror to see someone she barely recognized. She washed her face and kept staring at the woman in front of her as if this was the last time she would see her, or what was left of her. The healing cuts on her brow and her lip, the now almost completely faded bruises. The hint of regret in her eyes. Madelyn didn't want to let go of her. It had been years she had been trying to find Madelyn Moon, the real one, not the one that spent 14 years in foster care, not the one that lived in her car, not the inhuman, just Madelyn Moon.
The first time she met her was with Harper. She was hidden away, deep inside of her, slowly coming out. Lincoln made her come through much more than anyone until her family. The minute she met Penelope at the elevator, the minute she shook hands with Derek Morgan, the minute JJ and her had a girls' night, the minute Emily took care of her after she saw her crying on a bad case, the minute Hotch came into her life as a friend of her boss, the minute Rossi prepared her some carbonara, the minute she and Spencer got into that car, every time they got in a car.
But Madelyn Moon had died, she was dead. Not when she deleted the files from existence but when Lincoln appeared on the news. All this time she was just agonizing, a slow and painful death.
Madelyn grabbed the scissors and started cutting her hair. She was a fugitive now, even if the BAU didn't know it.
