The Patron Saint of Monsters

Chapter Eight Part Three

Trent stared at Oleander’s lips while he processed what she had just said. He ran his tongue over his lips and watched as she mirrored his actions. He bet she tasted like buttery salt and wine, he craved her kiss. He swallowed hard and his Adam’s apple bobbed. “No,” he whispered, “it wouldn’t be weird.” She leaned towards him but he pulled away. “While I would love nothing more than to kiss you Oleander, I wouldn’t be able to stand it if it was just some drunken thing and I don’t want to have you for a moment while someone else thinks that you’re theirs.” He told her.

Oleander felt rejected and her shoulders slumped, “Yeah.” she whispered.

Trent felt awkward and was immediately remorseful, he worried that he would never again get a chance to touch Oleander. “Is Leon going to eat that girl?” He asked in reference to the television.

Oleander shrugged and said “I don’t know he thinks he loves her.”

“Dali once said that he loved Gala so much that if she died he would eat her.” Trent informed her.

“Did he?” Oleander asked.

“Yeah he said that.” Trent responded.

“No, did he eat her?” She asked.

“No, I think he just spiraled into depression.” Trent told her.

She nodded her head, “He should have eaten her corpse, that would have been the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard had he done it.”

“You think that’s romantic?”  Trent asked with his eyebrows raised.

“I think that nothing drives a person insane quite the way that love does, and that if you aren’t committing acts of  insanity and doing things that the bored, sane, and unloved majority of the general public would consider questionable, then you aren’t really in love.” Oleander answered.

Trent smiled, “Yeah. I hope that Leon eats her heart, she deserves it for betraying him.”

“Are you going to eat my heart if I betray you?” Oleander joked.

“If you never betray me you’ll never have to worry about it.” He answered with a wicked grin that ran a chill down Oleander’s spine she shivered. A shiver that was not fear induced.
