𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐎𝐅 the many words that could describe Serena's first day back at school. The typically calm atmosphere surrounding the historic castle was instead rather frantic and unhinged, worse than Serena had ever seen it before. All of the fourth-year students at Hogwarts were particularly struggling to adapt to their changes in routine, their lessons abruptly becoming much more difficult than they were used to.

Professors were scrambling to perfect said lessons so that students would be on the proper track for OWL examinations next year, which unfortunately meant nearly every single one of Serena's lectures so far was absolutely jam-packed with information. The details about the specified subjects given to students were explained and illustrated at the speed of light, and every professor kept jumping from one subject to the next without warning. If you didn't write your notes down quickly and efficiently, you were never going to be able to retain the knowledge.

The only class that allowed somewhat of a break from the piles of coursework thrown at Serena was Defence Against the Dark Arts; although, that class was hectic in its own particular way. The new DADA professor and ex-Auror Mad Eye Moody was definitely a different breed of wizard. To the naked eye, he was quite a head case— not to mention, in Serena's opinion, a bit frightening— but below the surface, he was absolutely brilliant, having acquired a great deal of knowledge during his career. It was incredibly interesting to see how the unforgivable curses were used in person, making it probably one of Serena's most favourite lessons she's ever had. Albeit, she had to admit that her heart sunk in her chest when she saw how affected Neville was after witnessing the Cruciatus Curse. That was the only down side to that lesson.

Well, besides the fact that Draco Malfoy was also in that class, of course. Although, ever since their quarrel in the hallway before classes that morning, he's stayed relatively quieter than usual with her. She wondered if it was because he was far too occupied with his schoolwork to antagonise her, or if her words hit his ego too hard. Probably both.

Naturally, he still glared daggers at Serena when Professor Moody or Professor Snape had their backs turned to the classroom, and he scowled at her as they passed through the same narrow, dim corridor to get to their designated subjects, but his existence in her eyes had pleasantly been much less abhorrent.

However, she knew once everyone finally got settled in for the year— or once his giant ego started to inflate again— she'll unfortunately regain his undivided attention. Not like she ever asks for it or anything.

Luckily, Serena has the company of Flynn in the same subjects she shares with Malfoy: Defence Against the Dark Arts and Potions. It's been much easier ignoring the blond's irate glares with her best friend around to distract her.

"Can I see what you wrote for your conclusion?" The man of the hour himself broke Serena's train of thought, staring over at the Gryffindor girl with pleading eyes and a pout to his bottom lip.

"It's not finished yet," Serena warned, sighing before letting Flynn inspect her Transfiguration essay— which at first glance just looked like an extensively long piece of parchment with messily written words inked all over it.

There the two students sat under a massive pine tree by the Black lake, their coursework and textbooks sprawled out on the grass. They decided to work on their Transfiguration essay together right before dinner, yet barely a single word had been muttered between them until Flynn finally broke the silence.

They spent the past hour writing what felt like a bloody novel, and Serena's wrists were beginning to ache and crack with every movement. She personally didn't care how much she had to write— she was going to get it finished because she was motivated to keep her marks high this year.
