Chapter 2
Arctic
"Oh my god we've been flying for hours," Amber complained. The sky was already dark and covered with stars. Two moons were already showing in the sky, although the third was not due to show up in the sky for a while.
"Amber chill. It's not like we've been flying for that long! And aren't you a Skywing, shouldn't you be handling this best?" Yeti retorted. Even though he was exhausted too, he couldn't pass up a chance to yell at Amber. She had been being a pest all afternoon anyways.
"Seriously, stop fighting! You are giving-" Boriel started.
"I can speak for myself, Boriel!" Blackpearl groaned. "You guys are fine, just stop arguing for a minute and maybe we can figure this out." She sighed.
"Bet we can't," Yeti said. At least not with Amber around and the group being totally jerks to each other. He may be oblivious to some things, like romance, but not to the tension that was happening everywhere. And it was everywhere.
And as much as Yeti wanted to stop flying he definitely didn't want to get any closer to his house. Not home. Just a house. The worst house with the worst people in it. The horrors that laid inside those walls were things that no one should ever witness.
"Just shut up already!" Cherry yelled from the back of the group. She'd been flying next to Shard for the past hour, looking better every time Yeti had turned around. They'd probably made up. Their relationship was so unstable they could be fighting one minute and kissing in the next.
"Did anyone ask you, Cherryblossom?" Amber yelled. A couple birds flew out of the trees from the sheer volume of her voice. She was really angry. Angry to the point of oblivion. They were so close to a Sandwing army base they couldn't afford that. They would never see the Sandwings coming towards them.
"Shh!" Shard whisper-screamed. There was a look of absolute terror on his face. What was up with him? Yeti wondered, turning back around to continue flying.
Suddenly a scream was thrown into the night sky. He whirled around again, to see Shard getting grabbed by two enormous Sandwings. They were old and worn-torn by the looks of them. The larger of the two had so many scars you could barely see her scales.
But Yeti didn't have time to glance at the other before they dived away and out of sight.
His muscles surged with adrenaline. Even though Shard was one of the most annoying dragons he'd ever met, he still had to save him.
So while all the others drifted in silence, Yeti followed the Sandwings to the ground.
They blew fire at him almost immediately, but he dodged, nearly getting killed by the flames.
He shot back his ice breath, freezing off one of the dragon's arms. He shouted, a loud deep sound. He dropped Shard almost instantly, letting him and the other dragon plummet towards the ground.
Yeti nose dived after him, barely stopping to catch his breath as he hit the ground. The scarred female sprinted quickly but with a slight limp, allowing for him to catch up.
As much as Shard resisted, Yeti could tell it was in vain. He wasn't getting away without help.
He leaped at the group, prying Shard away. He winced as the blood coated his hands. Shard's tail wound was open and bleeding again.
This stupid Sandwing is not getting away with this. Yeti thought, blood pumping.
Growling fiercely, he clawed his way towards the enemy. The other reeled back, scratching Yeti in the throat, missing his artery by a millimeter.
He lashed out back, pounding the dragon's head in. Nearly smashing the skull with his razor sharp claws.
Red substance was everywhere, flowing out of every surface. It leaked everywhere. I'm caught red handed. Quite literally. What have I done?
The Sandwing fell limp in his arms and the rest of the dragonets were quickly by his side.
"Shard?! Are you okay?!" Cherry was the first to break the silence, as well as the last to land. She was so busy fussing over him she didn't even notice the dead dragon next to her.
"How-"
"What the-"
"Yeti, oh my-three moons! You killed two dragons! You killed two dragons? What?" Amber was all over the place, asking so many questions. Finally, Blackpearl shut her up.
"I-I didn't see this coming. How did I not see this coming? What's wrong with me?" She whispered in a hushed tone, it was so low, to the point where you had to listen hard to hear it.
And in that moment Yeti just wanted so badly to run over and hug her. This is why I love her. For the fact that she considers she has faults. For the fact that I can help her. Maybe I can be the hero for someone.
"I'm really sorry, Shard," Amber whimpered. She was staring at his wounds hopefully. Like maybe they would heal someday. "What was that even about?"
Shard looked up fearfully. "Uh-it might be because of, well, the prophecy. They've been after me since hatching. Those two are the ones that killed my dad actually," he shuddered.
"Ok..." Yeti mumbled, still trying to process what just happened. His talons were still twitching from the rush of energy. "Should we set up camp here for the night?" He figured if he could ignore it, no one would make him talk about it. Right?
"It's been a long day," agreed Cherry, "let's just rest. I'll get the bandages from the sack. Yeti, come with me."
He reluctantly followed the Rainwing away from the main group. What now? Yeti thought. Now that the rush had started fading he was back to his old, snappy self. The self that everyone hated.
"What?" He demanded.
Cherry looked him in the eye. "Thank you."
