"Okay, okay, it's fine, it's fine," Amber started worrying. She started beating her wings harder in nervousness.

Boriel looked at Amber in confusion and Shard turned to her.

"What? What's fine?" Boriel asked, fiddling with her talons.

"Ok, don't panic, but we just walked into scavenger territory." Amber said calmly.

"OH THREE MOONS WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!" Shard roared. He started flying in circles muttering and glancing around as if the scavengers would come flying through the air at any minute.

"Shard," Amber said through clenched teeth, restraining her temper, "I said DON'T PANIC."

"Ok, right, sorry," Shard said sheepishly.

"They haven't noticed us yet," Amber whispered, trying to get the noise level back down, "But they will soon."

"What do we do?" Boriel whispered back, catching on. Her brow was furrowed and she started glancing around.

"Um..."

"Come on, we need a plan!" Shard whispered frantically.

"Okay, OKAY, I'm thinking!" Amber whispered. She was starting to panic. "Okay."

"Stop saying okay."

"Okay." Amber tried to smile. "Um. I'll fight them.I'll make a distraction. Fire and roaring, that will get their attention. Then you two will fly away. No, don't fly, they'll see you...um...walk under the woods once I've drawn them away, and then fly once you're a distance away."

"Couldn't we ALL fly away? Right now?" Boriel suggested.

"No, they'll see us and shoot at us with their crossbows."

"Well, you'll join us when you've defeated them, right?" Shard asked hopefully.

"Don't be dumb, Shard!" Boriel snapped. To Amber, she said, "We won't let you fight them alone!"

"SHUT. UP." Amber demanded. "I flew out here first, I dragged you along, I caused this so I'll fight."

"Look," Amber added desperately, "they'll notice us soon and we don't have a better plan. So go tell everyone where I am, rescue me, la la la GO."

Boriel and Shard landed back on the ground and Amber watched until they had landed and hid in the trees. Then she flew higher in the air and let out a roar so loud a flock of birds flew out of the forest.

Her eyes scanned the arctic land and saw several scavengers spot her. She knew there had been more before, so where...?

Amber gasped and dove down to Shard and Boriel. "DUCK!" She yelled, and blasted the space over their heads with fire, completely charring the scavengers that had just attacked them.

"FLY! LOOK OUT FOR WEAPONS!" Amber yelled, turning around and blasting the air with fire again. More scavengers crawled out of the trees and rushed towards her, and she distracted them by shooting fire at the grass before them.

HA! RUN, YOU PUNY LITTLE SCAVENGERS! Amber thought. She felt a rush of excitement and realized she had missed fighting.

She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her tail and saw a sword in her tail, and a scavenger running away. She quickly pulled it out with a yelp.

"PATHETIC BEING! YOU DARE CHALLENGE ME?" Amber jumped in front of the scavenger and laughed menacingly. "DIE!!!" She yelled. "DIE, DIE, DIE!"

The scavenger squealed with terror, and Amber grasped him in her talons. Taking careful aim, she threw him a quarter mile away. Far enough for him to have trouble getting back, if he survived.

Amber shrieked with laughter. "MUA HA HA HA HA!"

The scavengers started retreating, and Amber felt her excitement start to fade. "Aw, come back," She said patronizingly. "I'm not done KILLING YOU YET!"

Suddenly a sharp, needle-like object pierced her leg. It wasn't a major wound, just a small cut, but it kept bleeding and bleeding. The world spun before her eyes.

Amber sat down heavily and held the cut, trying to stop the poison. Dang...scavengers.... She thought wearily.

Why was she so tired? I must have fought longer than I thought.

Amber got back up, determined to continue fighting, but she stumbled, her feet unsteady beneath her.

The scavengers started to close in, sensing her sudden lack of energy. As they got closer she could see their faces. The beady little eyes. The tufts of hair covering their heads. The weapons they carried by their side.

They spoke in little squeaks, and Amber couldn't make out what they meant. One took out its spear and tried to poke Amber. She barely was able to push him away.

Amber breathed another little flame at the scavengers, but it was so tiny and pathetic that one of the scavengers actually started laughing.

Her.

A dragon.

Being laughed at by a scavenger.

Moons help me, Amber thought weakly.
