Josephine explained everything to Wyatt, who not so sneakily kept stealing her chicken nuggets, and slowly felt the tension disappear. He always did listen to her very carefully.
"Alright, so, let me get this straight." Wyatt began, stealing another chicken nugget and dodging the slap aimed at his hand with a smirk. "You like the zombie, the zombie likes the girl who your parents favored growing up, and the girl is Addison - the nicest girl in the school."
"Thanks for the reminder." Josephine's response was drier than the Sahara desert.
"You're welcome." The werewolf didn't miss a beat. "Zed the zombie broke off your friendship, choosing Addison over you, and now you're heart has been beaten into apple sauce."
"Well.. yeah. Basically." Josephine nodded with a shrug. She frowned, rubbing the spot where her heart rested inside her chest. "Weirdly accurate about the apple sauce thing too... How'd you know?"
Wyatt's eyes drifted over to the white haired girl and watched as the cheerleader smiled widely at her friend Bree who was showing her something on her smartphone. The werewolf's lips twitched and Josephine caught the movement and narrowed her eyes.
"No way." The wolf quickly turned back to Josephine with wide eyes, but the girl was already making the connections. "You like Add-"
"ShhhH!" Wyatt hissed out, standing up in his seat to cover the human's mouth with his hand. He looked around nervously nodding at Addison, who had looked over at the commotion in confusion. The cheerleader smiled over and waved kindly in response. "If you finish that sentence, I will- ack!"
Josephine smirked victoriously as Wyatt took his hand back with a scowl and wiped it on his jacket. "Disgusting."
"You're lucky I didn't bite, I've done it before." She warned, reminded the wolf about a few months ago as she plopped a chicken nugget in her mouth. Wyatt's lips twisted into a crooked smile at the memory. "Who knew friendships started with a bite."
"Usually that's how friendships end."
"Well, I guess we're just weird together." Josephine joked, kicking him under the table. "But seriously, since when did you start liking her?"
It'd be a lie if Josephine said she wasn't jealous of Addison. Even if Josephine held Wyatt in a more familial category, it was a wound to her ego that no one liked her in the romantic way.
"It started with my Great Alpha theory, but then I started to get to know her better." Wyatt spoke his voice filling with strong emotion as his thoughts filled with memories of him and Addison together. "She's a natural born leader, strong, smart, kind... She has the heart of a wolf."
"That's... sweet?" Josephine didn't know what to say and Wyatt rolled his eyes, returning the previous kick with his own. "Ow! I'm sorry, but most people use wolf as an insult."
"But she's with Zed." The werewolf continued, ignoring Josephine and sighing. "I could never come between a couple just for my own selfish desires."
"Yeah, I could drink to that." The human girl toasted weakly, holding up her water bottle mockingly. Wyatt chuckled with similar emotion and brought his own juice box up to finish the toast. "To liking people who will never like us back."
"To us."
"To being crazy."
"To being crazy forever."
"To being crazy together."
"Here, here." Wyatt chuckled lowly, the two taking a long sip of their drinks. The werewolf set down his drink and grinned over at Josephine, but before either could say anything the call of his Alpha made his moonstone glow blue. "Ah, when Alpha calls..."
