little!billy"Bills, you sure you wanna watch this?" Max asked before inserting the tape into the VCR.
"Tch, what? Yeah, of course." he clicked his tongue.
"Hm, remember last time you watched a scary movie?" Max said, raising her eyebrows at him."Max!" Billy whined, dragging out her name with his face buried into a pillow. "Turn it off!"
"Okay, I am!" she replied, quickly shutting off the TV. Once Billy heard the noise stop, he peeked up from the cushion, his breathing heavy and tears welled up in his eyes.
"Aww, Billy. I'm sorry honey, did it scare you?" Max said, wrapping her arm around Billy. He nodded quietly, leaning his head onto her shoulder.
"m' scawed." He whispered, curling into Max's touch.
"It's okay." she said, resting her head on top of Billy's. "It's not real, I promise."Billy recoiled a small bit in embarrassment.
"That was one time! I'm a fucking adult, I think I can manage." He retorted, slightly embarrassed.
"Oh alright, then. Don't say I didn't warn you." She replied, beginning to play the movie. And for the most part, to Max's surprise, Billy handled it just fine. As it seemed, anyway. On the occasion, Billy found himself jumping or scaring easily at some of the scenes, which was odd to him because he usually never did. It just suddenly came on before he could stop it. Regardless, though, the two finished the film with no problems.
"Hey, look at that! You made it through!" Max joked at him.
"S-shut up." he replied, unamused.
"Yeah, whatever." Max grinned, ruffling his hair, causing Billy to scrunch his nose slightly. "It's late, we gotta get to bed.""Yeah, alright. Bye." Billy said, getting up and the two of them heading off to their rooms. Billy didn't think much of the movie as he got into bed and turned off the light. He laid down, relaxing his hands behind his head, his bunny stuffie laid next to him disregarded. That movie looked so fake, it couldn't possibly be real! Right? Maybe? Or, maybe it was true, and a killer clown really would go after him..? He curled up slightly, clutching his stuffie and hiding himself under his blanket.
"s'okay.. wight, bun?" he whispered to his plush.
So, maybe he didn't handle it as well as he thought. The room was dead silent. Darkness engulfed him. And Billy was stuck there, alone with only his fear.Small tears began to fall from his eyes. His lip quivered as he looked for any danger, but still nothing. A quiet creak sounded from afar, causing Billy to jolt a little. His stomach dropped as fear raced through his mind. What if a bad guy was trying to get them? What if a crazy killer was after him, just like in the movie? Or worse, what if they were after Max? The thought of it was too much to bear, quickly sending Billy into full-blown littlespace. He cried hard as he held his bunny tight, a thumb in his mouth. The boy could hardly sleep out of sheer anxiety, so he sat against the backboard, crying quietly to himself.
After about ten or so lonely minutes, Billy tried to work up the courage to open his door. He wanted Max. He needed her.
"Come on, Bill. You' done it befowe." he assured himself through his tears. Holding his plushie, he slowly turned the knob and opened the door, bracing himself for any horror that might be lurking. Nope, just silence. He breathed a sigh of relief, tiptoeing down the hall. He reached Max's room, knocking on the door as politely as he could in the middle of the night. Max opened the door after a few moments.
"What? Why'd you.." she trailed off, examining Billy hugging his bunny with teary red eyes. "Awh, Bills, what's wrong?" she said, quickly guiding him into her room. He instantly felt safer with her.Max felt like she already had a good idea why Billy had shown up, but she let him speak for himself.
"Can't sleep," Billy mumbled, chewing on the end of his thumb. "I was scawed, m' sowwy.." he apologized, his voice breaking as he began to cry again.
"Oh no, no! Billy, you don't have to be afraid." she comforted him, pulling him into an embrace. "Like I told you, it isn't real, remember? You're safe." she ran her fingers through his hair soothingly.
"This is all my fault. I knew better, I shouldn't have let you watch it." she scolded herself.
Billy was reduced to sniffles and hiccups. "No, s'okay. Said I could." Billy tried to explain.
"Well, no more scary movies for you, mister." Max declared. Billy sheepishly nodded. He turned to the door, a slight look of panic crossing his face.
"Do you want to sleep with me tonight?" Max asked, seeing his expression.
"Please?" he asked with hopeful eyes.
"Sure." she replied. "Now, let's get you to bed." she said, tucking him in with his bunny before laying down herself. Billy instinctively curled into her. A small smile grew on her face.
"g'night, Max." he said cutely, drowsiness in his voice.
"Goodnight, Billy."- 866 words
