It was just like any other Hallowe'en, except that it wasn't. It was the first Hallowe'en that Jane spent with her Aunt and Uncle instead of with her Dad. It's not that she didn't like her Aunt Lily or her Uncle James and especially not her latest friend Harry. It's just that she wanted her Daddy to be there. Nevertheless, she had fun. Harry was flying around on his toy broom with Uncle James watching and encouraging him. In the meantime, Aunt Lily had taken up storytelling for the three-year-old girl. Jane loved it when she did that. Her Auntie had the most wonderful stories about princesses with long hair, mermaids who use forks as a comb, and a daughter who saved China from the Huns.

Jane loved her family, in fact she adored them. That explains why what happened next hit her so hard that she wouldn't truly get over it for years to come.

It started when Uncle James froze. He was smiling, then the next moment something outside caught his eye and his face paled. In a blink of an eye, he turned towards Aunt Lily, already pushing Harry in her arms, and shouted.

"Lily, take Harry and Jane and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off!"

Jane didn't understand what was going on, all she knew was that something had to be wrong. Uncle James never acted like this. Neither did Aunt Lily. Now though her Auntie was quiet as she took her on the hip, holding Harry at the same time as well. She ran up the stairs and into the nursery. There was a thump downstairs which upset Aunt Lily for some reason. Jane stayed quiet even as tears ran down her face at the sight of her Auntie's distressed face.

"shhh, it's okay... it's all going to be okay", Aunt Lily hushed as she put Harry in the crib and told Jane to hide, all the time repeating how much they were loved. Jane didn't understand why she would do that. Did she think that she didn't know that her family loved her? No, that would be silly. Surely, Auntie knows that...

There wasn't enough time to ask though as the door creaked. A man entered the nursery and started talking to Aunt Lily. She was glad that the man couldn't see her in her hiding spot.

"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!"

"Stand aside, you silly girl ... stand aside, now ..."

"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead –"

"This is my last warning-"

"Not Harry! Please ... have mercy ... have mercy ... have mercy ... Not Harry! Not Harry! Please – I'll do anything-"

"Stand aside – stand aside, girl-"

Aunt Lily didn't budge. She remained standing in front of the crib, pleading him to kill her instead. Jane didn't understand why the man had to kill anyone. Daddy always said that that is very bad and only really evil people do such a thing.

At last the man gave up, he yelled something strange and a green light engulfed the room. Auntie's body dropped to the floor as the man moved on to the crib. Jane wanted to do something, anything, but she didn't know what. The moment she decided to come out of hiding, it was too late. The bad man had already spoken his venomous words and the green flash headed straight towards Harry.

Jane cried out to her godbrother. She heard a thump as the bad man fell to the ground, but didn't pay it any thought, desperate to reach little Harry.

He was okay. She could breathe again. At least Harry was okay. She wasn't tall enough to get him out of the crib so she just stayed close to it. Surely someone would come to check on them, right?

It seemed like forever, but a man with dark eyes and even darker, greasy hair entered the room. He didn't notice her nor did he spare a glance at Harry. All he did was cradle her Aunt's lifeless body close to his chest. Jane wanted to yell at him, demand him to help her and her godbrother, but she didn't dare. What if this man had bad intentions? Could it be that he was with the evil man from earlier? She remained silent.

Eventually, the man left just in time to be replaced by a giant, maybe not a full giant, but still. He was crying and reached out to Harry before taking off again. For the first time that evening, Jane was alone, she hated it. She figured the man that had taken Harry, must have been Hagrid. Her memory of him was vague as she had only seen him once and that was months ago, but she knew he was a friend of Dad's. Therefore she figured he would take Harry to safety. Daddy would probably come pick her up soon, so she sat down and waited.

Seconds turned into minutes, which turned to hours. There had been a moment when Hagrid and Harry had just left that she had thought she had heard her Dad. Though, as no one came up, she figured she must have imagined it. Her Dad would come pick her up. She was certain.

When morning came, she started thinking that maybe her Dad was waiting for her at home so she called Kreacher and ordered him to take her home. When it seemed that her Dad wasn't there either, she started to cry. He had to come! Auntie Lily said that Daddy loved her! Daddy had said that he loved her before he dropped her off at Aunt Lily and Uncle James'. He'll come...

She waited and waited, but he didn't come.

Mrs Black ordered Kreacher to find out what happened to her traitorous son, only to have him come back with the Daily Prophet where on the front page a hysterically laughing Sirius Black was being held by Aurors on his way to Azkaban.

Jane didn't know this and she wouldn't for a while to come. All she knew was that no one had come for her. Not her Daddy, Not Uncle Mooney, nor Uncle Pete...
