Chapter 18 Conversations
Emi's POV
I had gone inside after Eben, giving my cousin and Harlow some time alone. I didn't really know what to do as soon as I entered the place. I looked around the kitchen awkwardly. There was nobody in there at the moment, to my relief. I sighed lightly as I tried to hold back the tears of frustration and hurt for once. I was no longer allowed home, I felt like it hadn't been my home for a while, much rather a prison. It was now a place which scared me, a place where I'm supposed to feel safe.
I was frustrated at Karim, he hid me behind his back the entire time. I get it, I'm young, we're both considered children in the world of the wolves but he grew up. He was always the bravest and the better fighter, he started out being trained as a wolf. He knew glimpses of the life that I didn't. I didn't know who that made me feel more sorry for. He had the life taken away from him whilst I didn't get to experience any of it.
I shook my head and looked around, there was still nobody here. I shifted from foot to foot and took very small steps out of the kitchen. I didn't know the place too well but there wasn't enough room for me to get lost. I peaked my head into the living room where Abilene, Elowen and the children were. I smiled lightly as I watched them, not wanting to intrude. They seemed rather focused on what they were doing. I was going to pass the living room door and find somewhere else to place myself before I remembered the window.
"What're you doing?" A little voice asked as I quickly entered the room and looked around the side of the wall which separated a small playroom from the living room. The playroom was small and only held a table but it gave us a good view of the garden. "Are we playing spies?" I nodded to Lowell as the rest of the group came to watch.
"Ew." Channon said whilst Channing shook his head. "Kissing's gross." Typical behaviour. I wouldn't expect much more from those two. Oran shoved the two of them slightly and shook his own head.
"No it's not." Oran spoke softly."It's an expression of love." Channon and Channing made kissy faces at him. They were a little shocked when Oran moved in to accept with a grin. The twins ran away from the other child with fits of giggles. Lowell just shook his head.
"About time though." I nodded and chuckled as I watched Karim and Harlow kiss. In any other situation I would've taken a picture to capture the cuteness for blackmail use, but I didn't have my phone on me. I didn't have anything which belonged to me on my person. I tried not to let that bother me.
"He's not wrong." Abilene came up behind me. "It's something Lowell's been asking about for a while, the two of them are little romancers." She giggled lightly. I gave a soft chuckle.
"I've been waiting to introduce them to each other for so long, I don't know why I waited." I rubbed my bare arm awkwardly as I looked towards the two. "Makes youw ant something like that." She smiled sadly at me.
"Well, I can't really..." She trailed off slightly, I looked towards her with curious eyes. "Caretakers aren't supposed to have anything like that." I scoffed lightly and shook my head.
"That's bogus." My words were slightly bitter. "If you find someone then you should be able to be with them. Isn't building a close pack, a family, one fo the main natural instincts?" My eyebrows were furrowed and I was prepared to start ranting. She nodded rather quickly.
"Well, we're supposed to look after the pups. We don't have any time for romance or children of our own." She had a frown on her face. I was now completely facing her.
"That's still stupid. The pups won't stay pups forever." I paused slightly. "Who came up with that rule anyway?" She was about to answer me but Moss interrupted, our eyes had immediately snapped to him as his head came around the corner.
"Ralph wants to ask you and Karim some things." He said in his usual tone before heading back out. I nodded and looked towards Abilene, we were going to finish this conversation later. I want to know who to blame. I exited the living room and moved to the kitchen.
"If you two are done sucking faces." Harlow jumped about a foot in the air and turned around quickly. A smirk was on my face, hiding the annoyance and frustration. "Alpha calls." It felt strange to say that. Thai world was still somewhat new to me. It felt odd using these words in normal context.
"Be right there." Karim was still looking at Harlow. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms, huffing. It was only when Harlow started to come inside that Karim looked at me. "What's wrong?" I shook my head and led them inside.
"I guess he'll be in his office right?" I asked Karim, though it was Randall who answered with a nod as we passed him in the hallway. "This house being so small is very odd to me."
"It's still bigger than my house." Harlow commented and looked around. "Probably better made too." I let that discussion slide under the rug for now. The office looked rather friendly, still holding an air of intimidation to it. Ralph stood in front of the dask whilst Aiden sat on a chair across from him.
"Right." Ralph said nervously. "So he asked what Harlow knows? They didn't believe what you said and then he attacked you?" He got right down to the point. We nodded in unison. "So we need to ask him...so much." He ran his hand down the side of his face.
"What is your interrogation method?" Karim asked, he seemed to be a little less harsh then usual. "Theirs was intimidation, a little good cop bad cop." He gestured to show the different sides of the method.
"Ours...is similar." Ralph nodded with a grimace. "I will be changing it as soon as I can. Though we're going the traditional route."
