I was in the middle of finishing the paperwork for the recent case I'd completed in my notebook when I heard a knock on my office door.
"Come in." My head perked up when the door swung open to reveal Detective Gumshoe.
"Miss (L/n)? Um, Mr Edgeworth wants to talk to you in his office." The detective huffed, trying to catch his breath.
I smiled, "Did he say when? Just that I'm in the middle of something right now."
Gumshoe scratched the back of his head, sputtering, "He said it was urgent, Pal."
I sighed and put the cap on my pen before standing up and pushing my desk chair in. As I walked to the door, I smiled at Gumshoe, "Thank you for coming to tell me, Detective. I'll go up now."
He reciprocated my smile and I gave him a friendly shoulder pat before shutting the door to my office behind me. Speeding up the stairs to the 12th floor of the building, I quickly arrived at the Chief Prosecutor's office and gently knocked, "Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth, sir? You wanted to discuss something urgent?"
"Come in."
I opened the door hesitantly and entered.
"Ahh, Prosecutor (L/n). Yes, I was starting to think Gumshoe got lost... Anyway, I thank you for coming quickly since I do have something important to discuss with you."
My eyes averted the Chief Prosecutor's gaze as I gulped, "I'm not in trouble, am I?"
"Oh, of course not. Sit on the sofa, and I'll tell you." He quickly corrected my assumption, his voice becoming softer to assure me.
I nodded and hesitantly sat on the plush red sofa in his office as he stood from his desk to join me. After making himself comfortable, Mr Edgeworth continued, "Recently, one of the Chief Prosecutors in France reached out to me to ask if I had any prosecutors willing to learn and prosecute abroad. Being aware that you already know French as well as Wright telling me your desire to go to France, I thought you'd be the perfect choice for the trip."
My eyes lit up, "Really?!"
A small smile appeared on his face for a brief moment, "Yes, so you want to go?"
I nodded vigorously, grinning from ear to ear, "YES! Thank you so much for this opportunity, Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth, sir! I promise I won't let you down, sir!"
He chuckled and placed a hand on my shoulder, "In that case, I suggest you go home and start packing, prosecutor. Your flight leaves tomorrow at 12."
"Y-yes sir!"
Sensing my shift in demeanour, Edgeworth raised his brow as he questioned me, "Is that a problem, Prosecutor?"
Embarrassed, I bit the side of my cheek, "N-No... It's just that my car kinda broke down this morning a-and as dumb as it is, public transport has always made me nervous. But, don't worry! I'll just have to suck it up and-"
"I'll pick you up tomorrow at 9 and bring you to the airport."
My eyes widened, "I couldn't bother you with that, Mr Edgeworth! I'll just-"
"Prosecutor... I'm not offering to take you, I'm going to. Understand?"
I bit my lip and nodded, "Y-yes sir!"
He smiled slightly, "Very well, you may leave, Miss (L/n)."
I stood up and exited his office, only to hear a laugh from nearby, "Well, well, well, someone's awfully happy!"
"Miss Faraday? What might you be doing?"
She beamed, adjusting her glove, "I'm looking for Gummy! Have you seen him anywhere? I have something to tell him!"
I smiled and nodded, "I did see him, but I'm not too sure where he went afterwards. I was just talking to Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth and-"
Kay's eyes lit up. "Ooh... did you tell him yet?!"
"Uhh.... tell him what?" My face contorted into a look of confusion.
Despite the fact she was a 24-year-old, her eyebrows furrowed as she childishly crossed her arms and let out a "hmph".
Kay whined, "You're sooooo playing dumb right now!"
"I swear I'm not!" I chuckled.
Kay sighed in disappointment before she placed her hands on her hips, "I'm obviously talking about you confessing your undying love for Mr Edgeworth!"
I gasped, before yelling in embarrassment at her loud declaration, "M-Miss Kay, I have no idea what you're talking about! Even if that were true, that could never happen even and you know it!"
"So what if he's your boss?! Love always-"
"I-I hate to cut you off, Miss Faraday, but I have a lot of packing to do, so I should be going!" I frantically cut the thief off trying to excuse myself from the spectacle she made.
Kay realised my ruse and ran to catch up to me, "Hey! We weren't done talking!"
I turned and wagged a disapproving finger at the thief, "Kay, weren't you looking for Detective Gumshoe? That's much more important than my love life, isn't it?"
"Mmmmm..." she pouted, "Fine... You're right. But remember, this isn't over! Bye-bye!" Kay laughed mischievously as she ran away.
--------------------
Pulling up at the entrance of the airport, Mr Edgeworth parked his car before addressing me, "So, I guess this is where we part ways."
I nodded, frowning, "I suppose it is."
The air felt heavy as Mr. Edgeworth was deep in thought, hand tightly gripping the wheel. "Good luck, prosecutor. I'll miss..." His voice trailed off.
"I trust we'll stay in touch?" He finally looked at me and forced a smile.
I nodded, "Of course, Mr Edgeworth!"
His smile turned genuine as he patted my shoulder, "I'm happy to hear that, Prosecutor. Do let me know when you arrive, okay?"
I nodded and smiled back, "You got it, Mr. Egdeworth!"
Edgeworth gave my shoulder a squeeze before slowly letting go, "Now, I've held you up long enough, you should be going now."
"Mhm! Thank you for everything!" I abruptly hugged my boss, hopping out of the car and grabbing my belongings from the backseat.
"Catch ya later, Mr Edgeworth!" I saluted the cold man before turning around, unaware of the warm smile that formed on his face.
------------------MILES' POV
"What, Wright? I'm busy."
"I've been meaning to ask where (Y/n) is?"
"What's it matter to you?" Unbeknownst to me, irritation seeped through my voice.
I heard laughter from the other line, "Don't worry, Edgeworth! I'm not trying to steal her from you."
"W-What?! I-It's not like that!" I lost my composure at this accusation as I raked my free hand through my hair.
Wright sighed, "Yeah, yeah, whatever. The only reason I asked is because it's been a few weeks since I've seen her. At first, I dismissed it as her being busy, but now I've started to worry."
"You haven't heard? I gave her an opportunity to study abroad in France. She left the first of this month."
"WHAT?! How is that possible?! I thought-"
"Thought, what, Wright?"
"I-I mean, I just thought that you really liked her! You go on and on about how much good she does for the city and how kind she is and... Wait a second. Don't tell me the reason you sent her abroad..."
"Wright-"
"-is because you thought you liked her too much."
"..." I went silent.
"I'm right, aren't I?" Phoenix's voice filled with sympathy.
"I..." I started, "I couldn't get too attached, Wright."
I heard Wright sigh again, "You know that avoiding your feelings will make you miserable."
"I made a mistake, didn't I?"
--------------YOUR POV
I took a deep breath and knocked, hearing the familiar, "Come in." in response. I smiled and opened the door, revealing myself, "Hey."
Mr Edgeworth's head shot straight up, "Prosecutor (L/n)! I see you have returned," he spoke as he stood up, walking over to me and giving me a hug, something that was incredibly out of character for him, causing me to giggle, "Did you miss me, by any chance?" His face turned slightly pink as he let go of me and turned away, allowing his hair to cover up his face.
"It's okay if you did. To be honest I kinda missed you too... well! I mean missed being her not you specifically, not that I didn't miss you and all but-I should really stop talking, I'm so-" I cut myself off when he turned back to me and took my chin in his hand, "Yes, I agree... (Y/n). Would you mind if I kissed you?" I felt my heart rate increasing as I nodded, giving him permission. However, before he could, the door burst open, "Mr Edgeworth! I just got the news! Miss (Y/n) has ret-Oh."
"Gumshoe... get out," Mr Edgeworth spoke, turning to the door, his eyes twitching.
"Sorry sir!" and the door was closed again as Mr Edgeworth turned back to me, "Now, where wer-" I cut him off by leaping into his arms and kissing him.
"I love you (Y/n)."
I smiled and leaned my head on his chest/shoulder, "I love you too, Mr Edgeworth."
"(Y/n), call me Miles, it doesn't feel right having my girlfriend call me by a title."
I lifted my head and looked him in the eyes, "'Girlfriend'?"
I could see the panic appear in his eyes, "Yes... You do want to be my girlfriend, right?"
"I would love to be if that's what you want too."
"Of course, I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it, (Y/n)."
I smiled in response and kissed him again, "Now this is a great welcome back gift, Miles."--------------END OF ONESHOT
