The first class suite
7:00am
That morning I woke up feeling hung over and empty inside. Sleeping beside a man who loathed me was worse that sleeping beside a dead man. I rolled over, the quilt crumpled around my waist as I leant my hand out and rested it on James' shoulder. He was awake and quickly got up from his bed."Remember our deal, Isobel. You must not see that man again." Was all he said before he left. I presumed that he was going to the gymnasium and I wasn't interested in joining him. I felt too melancholy to even move that is until I thought of meeting Joel. I had gotten dressed and was eager to head out that was until my father walked in.
"Isobel? You in here?" His voice bellowed. He sounded almost annoyed. I thought he would've gone to breakfast already since he was a little on the chubbier side but I was surprised to see him walk into my bedroom.
"Uh.. yes daddy." He walked into the room, his eyebrows furrowed and he wore a frown on his face.
"What were you thinking?" He said out of the blue.
"What do you mean?" I tried to act oblivious but my father knew I wasn't that naive.
"Don't act like you don't know." He started to pace around the room, he looked at me with hatred in his eyes. He had never been fond of me even as a young child. He continued.
"I know what you did with that peasant boy. You know I forbid it. So does James. James' family has chosen you to be his fiancé for a fine price. I can ensure you that with James, your life will be easy and care free. Going off with that.. boy will bring you misery and pain. Look girl, I just don't want to see you get into a state of financial despair and I know that would never happen with James. What would your mother think?"
I didn't dare answer. The rim of my eyes flooded with tears, although my mother was a kind person, I knew she would want what was best for me. A miserable life with James.
"But daddy! You don't understand, James is.. he's. Not as he seems." Of course I couldn't go into detail because he would never believe me. James was basically like a son to him.
"NO BUTS ISOBEL. IM SICK OF YOU ACTING LIKE A MAN THINKING YOU HAVE A SAY AND THINKING YOU HAVE A RIGHT. YOU DONT." He screamed in my ear. He spat in the process.
I was so fucking sick of people treating me as if I wasn't a person. They had no idea what it was like for me.
"And I forbid you from talking to Joel. Do you understand me?"
"I understand." Was all I could say, tears rolling down my red cheeks.
