"This is the worst luck ever," you mumbled into your hands. You were sitting atop Peter's bed trying to contemplate how things went sideways so quickly. You had no job and now no house. Jobless AND homeless in the span of one month. Peter came in holding a tray which bore two cups, sugar and milk. "Hey, my aunt made us coffee. I wasn't sure how you drank it," he explained as he walked into your room. He placed the tray on his desk then sat in his chair, turning in it to face you.
"Oh, thanks. You guys really didn't have to do that," you murmured walking over to his desk to grab a cup. "I mean it was all May, really. And don't worry about it you're in an insane situation right now, it's the least we could do." You made the coffee how you like it before returning to Peter's bed. "I just, can't believe this. I mean I've grown so attached to that house. I thought I was gonna live there forever," you joked, staring at the beverage in your mug.
"God these past few weeks have been insane. I can't even begin. My job..sss. Plural. My house, all this stuff with Spider-Man that I can't even get into," you felt yourself choking up. The back of your eyes began to sting as your tears taunted you, threatening to spill. You sniffed and apologised for being dramatic. "No no it's not dramatic. I get it. I totally understand. This can't be easy. If it were me I'd be rolling on the ground crying right now,"
A gust of air was expelled from your nose as a weak attempt to chuckle. "Why don't you tell me about the 'Spider-Man stuff'. Being around the guy for so long I think I'd have some good advice," he replied. You let out a sigh. "Where to begin," you joked. "Well, I'm not sure how much information I can say but..." you explained in light detail about your adventures with Spider-Man. "I know he fights for the greater good but... I don't know if I can handle it,"
Peter said your experiences were quite relatable to him. "I went through something similar to you. It was when I lost Gwen. Er...when we lost her, Spidey and I. I felt like I couldn't take the pressure of all this superhero crap, so I left," he told you. "How did you find the strength to go back to helping him?"
"Uh, well it was largely because of you," he sheepishly replied. "Me?"
"Well- I mean, you showed me that Spider-Man was still needed by people. And you know, the dude is pretty much helpless without me, so, it only made sense I join him again." You sat there in awe of his story. Even though he was knocked down and at his wits end, he got back up again. Just like Spider-Man. The more you thought about it, the more similar those two appeared to be.
"That's quite admirable. I'd say you're just as much of a superhero as Spider-Man is," you chimed. A chuckle rumbled from the pit of his stomach as he thanked you. Your lips curled into a smile before a yawn forced its way out of your lungs. "Oh, are you tired? You can sleep on my bed I'll sleep downstairs," Peter said getting up. "What? No no, don't worry, I'll sleep on the couch, this is your bedroom."
"Nah it's ok, make yourself comfortable, I'll be fine," he insisted, already walking out. You reached out for his shoulder and said, "But-" Peter interrupted you, saying he would feel bad leaving you on the couch. He wished you a good night's rest and left his room, closing the door. You huffed, grateful for his hospitality but also feeling guilty. No use dwelling on it. You drank the last of your coffee and went to bed.
The next few weeks were surprisingly peaceful. You did manage to get hired at the café you loved and they paid decent money, all things considered. You also ended up getting closer with Elise. You still got nervous around her but it wasnt as bad as before. You were seriously considering asking her out. But that wasn't important right now. You wondered how you were gonna get into contact with Spidey. You've called him a few times at Peter's house but he's never picked up. It always went straight to voicemail.
He seemed to be avoiding you, but you couldn't blame him. You would find a way to contact him somehow. You're still living with Peter and Aunt May but every minute of free time you have you spend it on looking for a new place. You did enjoy their company but you felt very much like a heavy weight on their backs. That's not to say you didn't pull your weight around.
