The city. NEW YORK CITY. "Concrete jungle" like Alicia would say.
My home, my city. Well, not just mine. It's Anna's, it's Ben's, Sofia's and it's the Avengers. They protect the city and live here, in a 59-story building. And I'm standing right infront of it.
"Maven! Look, it's so big!" Anna screams
"Yeah!" I scream back, faking my excitement.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Avengers. I really do. But with them comes the bad. Their past comes for them and to tear them apart, they hurt us. The ones that have nothing to do with it. I don't blame them for their past, but it's true. And I'm just not in the right mood to be excited over a tower that I see every day.
"Come on" Anna says and grabs my wrist. She pulls me away and we walk to a mall.
We walk into Footlocker and Anna runs around, dragging me with her. She stops and looks at a shoe. It's a Nike Air Force 1 in mint. It's okay, not what I would buy but if she likes it, I'm okay with it.
"What do you think?" She asks me
"I like it. Try it on" I tell her and she pulls the box with her size out
She slips into them and walks a few steps with it. She looks so happy even though she's been through a lot, I don't know how she does it. I could need a tip. You still don't know me that well, do you? Gosh, no you don't...you'll know it soon enough.
"Mave?" I hear Anna, snapping me out of my thoughts
"Huh?" I answer
"You okay?" She asks me
"Yeah, sure" I say and put my smile back on "And? Will you buy them?" I ask to change the subject
"I would. But I don't have enough with me, come on. Let's go to H&M!" She cheers happily but I know she's a little sad that she can't buy it
"Okay, come on" I state and we walk out of the store
It feels like we walk into every store in NYC, it's crazy. I missed hanging out with Anna, we were close...before her accident. She was in hospital for a while because they didn't know what was wrong with her. No one knew. Not even me, I wasn't allowed to see her. We had no contact for a while...and when she came back, she did more with Sophia than with me, I don't know why. But last year, she started to talk with me more again. I'm happy that they found out what was wrong and could help her. Now she's healthy and still happy as she always was. And I missed her.
Now we're about to get some ice-cream. We walk inside the store and sit down at a table at the window.
"Sophia and I went to the cinema yesterday. The movie was so good. You know the Top Gun movie? There's a second one and it was so good! Maverick now trains the new pilots for a mission and this one scene at the beach, ahhh. It was so hot. I mean, they were hot and I don't know, I don't wanna spoil too much. But you have to watch it. Even Ben liked it and he likes nothing except Starwars" Anna almost shouts whulr telling me about yesterday. She talks and talks and won't stop. I like it, I don't have to talk if she does
"Nevermind, what do you want?" She asks
We grab the menu and look for something delicious. The waitress comes to our table and asks us what we would like to have.
"Uhh. I get the strawberry cup" I answer
"And I'll have the banana split, please" Anna orders and the waitress walks off
Anna begins to talk again and I just listen to her, telling me about her week, I can't tell her mine. I'd have to lie because nobody knows about my powers. I don't want to lie to her, not more than I already do. So I just sit and listen. We eat our ice-cream and Anna pays our ice-cream but I give the waitress the tipp. We walk out and towards the bus station. I like to walk back to the orphanage but she always takes the bus. I would go with her back if I didn't have the one thing I still need to do. So I stop and look at her until she notices that I have stopped and looks at me.
"What?" She asks me
"Uh, I still want to stay here for a while, you know, drawing," I lie. Yup, lied again.
"Okay, have fun. See you later" She responds and walks into the bus that had just arrived.
There is this one thing I need to do. The one thing that makes me smile right now when I think about her face when I come back with it. Maybe you already guessed it. Well, I'm walking into footlocker again...does it click? I'm going to buy her the shoes. I grab the box in her size, buy them and walk back out. I put the box under my arm and start walking back.
Anna is in our room, talking with the others. I smile and walk inside, which makes them look at me, I pull my arms from behind my back and show her the box.
"You didn't" Anna yells in disbelief
I just smile
"No. no you didn't" She repeats
"No, I didn't. Their actually for me" I say, acting like I really mean it
You should see all their faces right now. I start laughing so loud, I bet everyone in this building hears it.
"Of Course I did! Now take it before I give them back" I say with a smile
She runs up to me and jumps in my arms. I let go of the box and let her in. "thank you" she whispers against my ears and I smile even bigger
"Group hug!" Ben says and runs at us with full speed
Sophia looks at me with a smile and I wave her over with my only free hand. I don't really feel that comfortable when I hug people but I love when I can make them happy, I won't die because of it. I'm happy as they release me so I can breathe again though. Maybe I could have died. Anna looks at me and I smile.
"Uh, you made me drop this. It's your fault" I chuckle "And it's your fault that I talk so much, stop me" I add and she laughs
I give her the shoebox and she opens it.
"Guys, look. they're so beautiful! I love th-" And that's when I stop listening because I know that she's gonna talk for a while. A long while.
