24. Moving Forward

My heart is beating so fast at the sight in front of me. I can't believe he is here, but why is he here? When I look at him there is so many emotions radiating off of him that it is making my head swim. "Nate what are you doing here?" He doesn't answer me he just keeps rubbing his hands over his face. What the hell is wrong with him? "Nate." He finally looks back at me and for once I cannot read his expression.

"You never answered my text." Seriously this over a text. I look into his eyes, and they look bloodshot. "Nate, I told you I was going on a date. But better yet have you been drinking?" He laughs, not his normal laugh, but one that seems like he is trying to hide his pain. "I wish you would have read my text Cass."

"Why?" my heart is pumping so fast I can feel it everywhere in my body.

"It doesn't matter it's too late. I ruined everything for us." He gets up and starts walking towards the door, but I block his path. I need to know what he is talking about. I feel if I let him walk out things will never be the same. Either way things will not be the same after tonight.

"What's too late?"

He finally looks at me and too many emotions for me to understand, so I do what I know best. I place my hands on his face, he closes his eyes and leans into my touch. Any minute I swear I am going to have a heart attack. I close my eyes and trace his features, but I still can't figure it out. What is going on with him? I have never seen him act like this. "Nate." I whisper and he steps away from my touch.

"Cass, I'm sorry."

"You have been saying that a lot lately." He gives me a sad smile and I just want to see that gorgeous smile again. "I know but I can lose you Cass, it will fucking kill me." I go to step closer to him, but he backs up and that hurts more than I can explain. "You haven't Nate, I swear."

He chuckles as he shakes his head and gives me that sad look again. "I will. You'll go on another date with Dr. McSquarepants." I can't help but let out a giggle. "It's Dr. McWetmypants." He groans loudly as he runs his fingers through his hair. Damn why does that look so sexy when he does that? "Ugh! Yes, the damn fucking doctor."

I smirk at him. He was eavesdropping on my conversation. I guess I am going to have to mess with him. Like the time I put hot sauce in his soup because he overheard a conversation he didn't need to.

"Says who?" I raise an eyebrow at him.

"I thought..." I shake my head at him. "Well, I heard..."

"Didn't you learn your lesson from the last time?" He chuckles and finally I get a smile at him. "You heard wrong." I bite my bottom lip as he opens his mouth then closes it a few times before he finally speaks.

"So, you are not dating the doctor?"

"No" I smile and this time that gorgeous smile spreads widely across his face.

"Why Cass?" He really has to ask me that. I guess he does not know me well at all. I don't know if I should be hurt, insulted or glad at this. I shrug my shoulders, "I'm just not interested in him that way." He steps towards me, but I take a step back. "You're not." Why is it hard for him to believe that. "Nope" I smile at him and back up again this time hitting the door. He puts both hands on the door trapping me between him.

"Why are you here Nate?" The words come out breathlessly even though I try to make them come out strong.

"I want you Cass." The look in his eyes can undo me in so many ways. "Nate" He brings his fingers to my lips. "You are my best friend Cass." His index finger trails my bottom lip, and it takes everything in me not to lick my lips right now. "I can't deny what I feel for you anymore."
