45. Something's Wrong

"I say make him suffer. Refuse to give it up for a while. That always make men get on their knees and crawl to you."

"I like her way of thinking."

"I can't believe you two are actually getting along."

I thought Lil was going to kill Vicky when I invited her over. She did threaten to chop off her tits and for the first time, Victoria was actually scared.

"Hey, when it comes to bashing men us women have to stick together." Lil high fives Vicky and I shake my head. 

Never would have imagined us being able to be friends but here we are a month after Nate was done with physical therapy, drinking a glass of wine.

"When Hunter, acts like an ass. I will wear the sexiest outfits to drive him mad and ignore him all the same. My husband caves every time."

I felt like a complete idiot when she came over that day when Nate showed up later. I know she had something to do with that. She told me that her and Hunter were engaged at the time we saw them and Nate's accident. After what happened to him, they did not want to waste any more time. They went down to city hall and got married. 

"Relationships are complicated."

"Please Lil, you barely said yes to be official with Derek." You cannot hide from me that you are in love with that man. A fool could see it! "I just don't think Nate wants to get married anymore. It's been months since he asked me and hasn't said anything since." Truth is that hurts. Did I really screw this up?

"You two will get married. That man has been in love with you since high school. He was just too stupid to realize it. You both were." I can't deny it even though I tried to back then.

"I think we have had enough to drink." Or maybe it's just me because my head is starting to throb.

"We've only had two glasses."

I look at Vicky because that can't be right. I feel like I have had more than that. 

"That can't be right."

"It's true babes. We have just been bashing on Nate most of the time because he is an idiot."

"Something's wrong." I don't know what it is, but I can feel it. "It feels like a jackhammer is going through my skull."

"Maybe you're just a lightweight." Vicky, I will hurt you.

"You were never much of a drinker." I love you Lil's but you are not helping here.

Blinking my eyes was the worst thing to do. My blood runs cold as everything is blurry around me.

"No, something is definitely wrong. Lil, where are you?"

"Cassie, it's not funny."

"I'm not fucking joking!" Everything is turning darker by the second. "I knew it was too good to be true." 

"I'm calling Derek." I can hear the panic in my best friend's voice, and it does not help me at all.

"Breathe, Cassie." I thought I was. Vicky's hand is in mine, but when I can't see her, I cry even harder. 

"This can't be happening."

"Derek said to meet him at the hospital. Try to relax, we will figure this out."

Too freaked out to say anything as they guide me out of the house and into the car. My sobs are the only sound as she drives. Vicky sits in the back with me and tries to calm me down but all I want to do is curl up into a little ball. The moment the car stops the back door is flung open.

"Cass, baby."

"Nate." Squinting my eyes just makes me cry harder when I can't see his gorgeous face.

"It's okay doll, I got you." When he scoops me up into his arms I cling onto him tightly. Why is this happening? It's been almost a year since my surgery, and everything was going just fine. "We'll figure this out." I don't say anything as I hold onto him tighter. Because I already know before we get the tests done what is happening. I'm losing my sight. "Derek is already getting the room ready so we can go straight to him."

"Okay." I barely manage to say as the pounding increases.

"How long have you had headaches, Cass?" When did we get in the room?

"I haven't."

"Something must have triggered it."

"I don't know, Derek." It hurts to talk. It hurts to think, and my heart is breaking because I will never get to see again.

"You don't know that baby." Did I say that out loud? "I know what you are thinking, so just stop it. Even if it is the worst case, it does not change anything." It changes everything for me.

"Well let's find out, shall we? CT scans, MRI and retina scans and I feel like I'm going to break. "Everything on your scans look normal Cass, but I will confirm with Dr. Novac to make sure."

"Maybe I was only meant to have my sight back for a little bit."

The touch of Nate's hand in mine soothes me just a little. He brings mine up to his face and I take a deep breath. I have not traced his face in a long while, and it helps calm my nerves some.

"Whatever the results are my love. I will still love you know matter what." I feel him close his eyes and everything else fades away. It's just us, even if everyone is in the room with us. I continue to trace his features. I actually miss doing this. "I have loved you for so long Cass." I can feel his smile and I can't help but give a small one in return.

"I love you too Nate."

"No matter what the results are, I still want to make you, my wife." He can't be serious! "I was going to do this later on today. I know I proposed to you back in the hospital when I woke up. Things just tended to get in the way after that. Partly my fault." And mine. "Even though this is not the most romantic setting. Cassandra Logan, even though you said yes, I will ask you again. Will you please be my wife? Marry me, baby"

Can I really do this to him? I mean what if I am blind, he will have to look after me and I don't want to be a burden. What if we have kids? The thought of never being able to see my child hurts more than anything. Too many what if's right now and I can't think straight.

"Cass, what do you say?"

I just don't know, anymore.
