Everything was happening so fast that I couldn't wrap my head around it.  I don't remember what happened after I noticed Nate lying on the ground looking so lifeless. This is all my fault! If I didn't run out of the diner none of this would have happened. If I just went on the damn date with him, none of this would have happened.

Why can't I open my eyes?

Movement is all I hear besides one dreaded word 'surgery'. I try to speak but nothing comes out. What is happening right now?

"Cass, baby open your eyes." Fluttering my eyes open I see his gorgeous face. "Hello beautiful." His smile. He's the one that is beautiful.

"You're hurt." But when I look at him, he looks completely fine. "How? You were hit by a car. You saved me."

"I will always take care of you, doll." His arms encircle my waist, laying my head on his chest has me breathing a little bit easier. "Everything is going to be okay I promise."

"I can't lose you Nate."

"Look at me." The passion and truth in his eyes make it hard to stand up without wanting to fall. "You are stuck with me, love. We are growing old together. We will watch our kids and grandkids grow. I promise you that."

His lips on mine are so soft and gentle, if I didn't feel them, I would say it didn't happen.

"Please, Cass wake up." I am awake. Wait! Why does Lily sound like she is crying and when the heck did she get here? "You're scaring me here babes." Darkness becomes light when my eyes open and see the sad smile on her face. "Damn it, Cass, don't do that again."

"Where's Nate?"

"He's in surgery. Derek is with him." My head and heart hurt. "Try to stay calm. You have been out of it for a few days."

"What?" That can't be he was just here. I can still feel his touch.

"I'll let Derek explain."

"How did you know?" Changing the subject so my mind doesn't spiral out of control.

"Strangest thing." She smirks. Why is she smirking? "I got a call from someone I never thought I would hear from ever again. How he got my number, I will never know."

"Hunter." It wasn't a question, stating the obvious. Of course, private investigator he must be pretty good at it. I have to give him that.

"Yeah, after I threatened to chop off his balls and make him eat them." Of course she would say that. Both smiling at each other. I love this woman and am happy to have her in my life. "He told me what happened." Grabbing Lil's hand, she gets up and comes lays on my side where there are no wires. "I was so scared, for both of you."

When the door opens Derek walks in smiles when he sees me up.

"Good to see that you're awake."

Derek comes in and explains that Nate had to have surgery upon arrival but then they discovered a brain bleed and had to go back in. As for me I had...

"A tumor on my brain!"

"Yes, luckily it wasn't big. If you were experiencing any hallucinations or blurred vision, blinding headaches it could have been the cause."

"What about Nate?"

Change the subject because I can't deal with this right now. Lily squeezes my hand, and I am grateful.

"He's resting and should wake up in a couple of hours. When he does you can see him, I have arranged for you to be transferred to the same room. Now let me take a look and check you out." Flash shines bright in my eyes and blink at my eyes burning, but I followed his instructions. "Everything looks good, but I need to know if you experience any headaches or blurred vision again. You should have told me right away."

"I just thought it was stress."

"Well, it can become a lot more than that, if we do not check properly."

"Got it."

Hours later I'm transferred to his room and my heart breaks when I see him bruised and broken.

"This is my fault."

"It's not, babes."

"Yes, it is."

Taking his hand the tears fall because it feels so lifeless.

"Get some rest, I'll be back later to check in on you. Love you, Cass."

"Love you, Lil."

_____________

"Why hasn't he woken up yet?" It's been too many hours since he was brought in here. Yet he is still asleep. Something's wrong.

"Cass, calm down." He wants me to calm down. If he wasn't my friend, I would hurl something at his head. "We will run more tests to see what we can find out."

You have to be okay. Kissing his head and saying a prayer that he will be alright. Tears fall as they roll his bed out of the room. Curling up on my bed and close my eyes.

"Come back to me Nate."

"I'm right here baby." This isn't real. I know it's not, but I miss him, and it hasn't even been twenty-four hours. "I'm not leaving you love." I hope not.

"I don't know what's going on, but you are not waking up Nate. Please wake up." His touch, it feels so real. Tingles cause goosebumps all over my skin.

"Do I not look awake to you?"

You do, but this is not real.

"I love you, Cass."

My eyes flutter open and Nate's bed is back, and Derek is checking his vitals.

"What's going on?"

"Sorry, Cass. Nate slipped into a coma." This is not happening. "It's not technically a bad thing. It can help his body heal faster without any added stress."

So, we do not know when he is going to wake up."

"Hopefully soon, Cass."

"Thanks Derek. Can I just be alone with him for now."

"If you need anything, call me."

Nodding my head he kisses my forehead and leaves.

"This is all my fault." Climbing in his bed, laying my head on his chest. HIs heart beats to the same rhythm as mine. "I'm so sorry, baby."

Days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months and no change. Nate haunts my dreams in the best possible way, but it is pure torture.

"Wake up! It's been three months now Nate." Not like me yelling is going to change. You just lay there peacefully. "Don't you think you have had enough sleep by now."

Stop crying, damn it!

Maybe his life would have been better if he never met me. Because this would not have happened. I will never forgive myself for this.

"I love you. Please come back to me."

Is he ever going to wake up?
