I woke up to my father throwing his hot coffee at me and screaming in my face to get up and make breakfast for him, my mom, my younger siblings and the gang. He stomps out of my room which was nothing more than a small room in the basement of the house where we keep trespassers and rival gang members. I get to my feet and not being able to get ready I rush to the kitchen with coffee-soaked clothes and a burn forming on my skin as I begin cooking the food.
I get bacon, eggs, toast and pancakes started and my ears pick up everyone waking up and getting ready for the day. Rushing to plate the food and put it on the giant oak dining table that can seat 50 people. Gang members walk in pushing past me to get to the food, even being the Mob boss's firstborn child no one respects me here as I was born a girl and not a male. My brother, the second-born, is treated like a god by everyone in the family as he is gonna be the next mob boss when dad steps down.
I am 12 years old, the eldest and I have 4 younger siblings, all 10, 7 and 5 years old, 3 brothers and the baby of us my sister at only 6 months. Ever since I was born they never liked me since the day I could walk they hit, punched and kicked me making sure I knew my place in the gang which was given to me by my dad. I grabbed some food and rushed to my room to eat, after stuffing the food in my mouth as fast as I could, then I rushed to shower and get dressed to begin my walk to school.
One hell hole to another I'm the school's punching bag no one stops it not even the teachers. I do my best to get good grades but not even that gets me anywhere with them, as my brother can fail and be praised for it. So many times have I thought about running away but I had nothing and nowhere to go, I just sucked it all up and never fought back. My dream is to find my place in life and live it as I want.
The worst that happened to me was no longer the beatings from the gang members or my family but my father started to sexually assault me after the doctor told him I should never have kids when I'm older or it will kill me. Luckily the doctor was somewhat nice to me as she stitched my wounds up. She had asked if I wanted to go undergo she could do a total hysterectomy on me. I was confused as to what that was so she explained it to me and I said yes not caring, I just didn't want to deal with death so soon.
Look, a 9-year-old is scared of death just to bear her lover's babies and it killing her. We did it behind my family's backs and she wouldn't tell them. Luckily it was all good, they never suspected it and I was fully healed after a while, thank you fast healing. My scar was barely visible to anyone so no one can tell it ever happened, I don't fear the rival gang members we keep in the cages.
They are more friendly than my own family, one has been here for 3 months now he and I have become close friends. I sneak him more food when I can, we made an agreement that if I break him out he will take me with him before leaving me in a town far away from here. I didn't think that day would be coming up so much sooner than I thought.
2 months later
Happy birthday to me October 31st, It's my 13th birthday and everything that can go wrong does go wrong. No one wished me a happy birthday as I cooked breakfast. A gang member bumped into me, making me drop the food all over the floor making my father pissed. He stomps over to me screaming.
"CAN'T YOU DO ANYTHING RIGHT!?" He raised his hand with his metal claw rings and brought it down right across my face.
I scream in pain holding my right eye and crying as I feel the blood dripping down my cheek and between my fingers. He grabbed me by the neck bringing me to his face, his eyes widened and dropped me to the hard tile floor. I felt my ankle break as I landed wrong on it as he said.
"Get out of my sight you disgrace," Spat on me.
"Bet she will die alone as no one will ever love her.'' My third youngest brother said.
"Stop making fun of your sister, even if it's true.'' My mother laughed as she pats him back.
I crawl to the basement. My friend was worried as he looked at me seeing the blood trickle down my face. "It happens tonight, get ready to leave," I whisper to him as I quickly washed my face of the blood seeing 4 deep gashes going over my right eye, the bleeding didn't stop so I bandaged it to the best I can. That day I skipped school, never leaving my room as I packed my things to leave this hell hole. We waited till the dead of night to leave, I unlocked his cell and he picked me up in his arms.
We stay quiet as I point him to the exit, our ears hyper-focused on any sounds from the gang members. We get outside and make it to the garage with all the cars. I push the button so the door opens and he grabs a random key and unlocks the car. He rushes over to the car and gets me in the back seat as he runs to the driver's seat. He wastes no time driving through the fence blocking the driveway putting the pedal to the metal.
After driving for a day straight he stops the car to take a break and fill the car. I pulled out some snacks that I stuffed into my bag. I guessed my parents wouldn't come looking for me but I bet they are throwing a party to have me gone for good now. As we eat my tears keep flowing my eye stings under the make-shift bandage as the tears enter the wound. My friend pulls me over the center console and pulls me into a hug.
"You're free now, no need to shed any more tears... what would you like to be called from here on out?" He asked me.
I think long and hard and look into his dark brown eyes with my bright yellow eyes "Skylar, I always loved that name.'' He smiles at me and kisses my head.
"That's a beautiful name for a beautiful young girl. I promise to get you as far away as I can from here Skylar to a place that's safe from your old life.'' He held me close.
"You never told me your name," I asked as I felt tired.
"No need to know a lone gang member's name, now get some sleep we'll leave at dawn.'' He said.
