My mother always tells me that every kid expresses things differently than others. Like special interests, for example, dancing, singing, but I don't know how to express myself.

It mostly has to do with being around socially with other people besides my family. Today, I'm seeing a doctor for a checkup. Mom said I should keep myself busy, so I decided to draw while I wait.

"And you said he's not talking as much as the other kids at school. Is that correct?" The doctor inquired while looking at his clipboard.

"Mhm. Yes and sometimes he has difficulty with eye contact or whenever I call his name."

"Does he respond right away?"

She shook her head, "No, it takes me three times to call out his name before he even acknowledges anything and answers. He's fine with a lot of words, but he struggles with putting them together and comes up with his own words."

"I see." He scribbled something on the board, it sounded like it. "Well, from what we can tell by what you're saying, it sounds like your son has autism spectrum disorder."

"Huh? Autism Spectrum Disorder? I don't understand. How is that possible?"

"It could be genetics, it could be environmental factors. But there's a huge myth that it has to do with vaccines, it's not really true. Sometimes, but rarely, it occurs spontaneously."

"Oh."

"But I have to say, I'm surprised at how well he's doing. You should be lucky."

My mother scoffed, "What? Lucky that my son has autism?!"

"What I meant is, he would've shown a lot more signs, but it's very little. Don't let that lead you astray, just because he shows little traits, he is still classified under the autism spectrum. There's no such thing as only a little bit on the spectrum, it's general that they are no matter what."

"Okay, so what should I do?"

"So far, Izuku speaks well, but he has a hard time pronouncing a few letters and words. I suggest he starts going to speech lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays during class. He does meet the eligibility to get help on tests, so..."

I don't know what autism meant, but I was too busy drawing to even notice. After a while, my checkup was over and we both exited out of the building as I held her hand and with the picture in the other.

My eyes glanced at her quickly, then I looked down on the ground. "Mom. You okay?"

I heard a sigh, she must be upset, "Yes, I'm fine, Izuku. Mommy's just thinking about what to say to daddy."

"Does it have to do with me?" I felt myself being lifted off the ground and I found her carrying me in a secure way.

"It's hard to put into words, but I need to tell him about what your doctor said." Then our foreheads touched, "Let's stop for some ice cream and then head back home. How does that sound? Do you want the same one?"

"Mint chocolate chip!" I exclaimed and giggled as our foreheads moved. "Oh! Picture!" She didn't get what I was saying until I waved the picture in my hand for her to see.

Her eyes widened, "Did you drew this?" She glanced at me while I eagerly nodded at her, "Don't lose it! I'm hanging it on the fridge when we get home."

The rest of the day went just as planned. We got ice cream and came home. Dad just got down the stairs and put his phone away.

"Hey, Inko," he greeted and gave her a kiss on the cheek, "How was the checkup?"

Mom's smile faded as she put me down, "Izuku, why don't you do some drawings, I'll hang what you made on the fridge." I just went to the little table once she put me down. "Let's talk outside." They're going to the kitchen.
