The group clambers over one another to get to the challenge; in the distance, you see a backdrop and stage set up, and it feels a little bit like those fairytale amusement parks. An elaborate carousel dully hums beneath an illuminated neon sign: Excess Baggage.
You glance at Suresh, who gives you a sympathetic smile and shrug. He approaches the spinning carousel, tilts his head upward, and squints as he peers into the sign.
"Not bad," he says.
The others don't hear him; Kat is cheering, Alfie is clapping Eddie's shoulders enthusiastically, and Finn is laughing beside Dana. You take a deep breath and a step toward the group, wondering if the fun, easygoing vibe hanging over you will withstand a little baggage.
You wrack your mind. What more could possibly be exposed? As if reading your thoughts, Suresh glances at you and heaves a great sigh, too.
"It isn't nearly as fun when everyone here knows more about you than you know about them," he says to you, quietly.
"Who knows?" you whisper back. "Maybe the tides are about to turn. Can't be that bad when we've all got a little dirty laundry out there, right?"
"Oy! Lovers!" calls out Eddie, and you scowl in his direction. "Enough huddles – let's get this show on the road!"
"I want your dirty laundry, babes!" Dana laughs, playfully smacking Eddie's arm.
Kat glances at you; her lips twitch, like she almost wants to smile, and then she looks away.
"I can't think of anything I wouldn't tell you guys hammered drunk... or dead sober," says Finn boldly. "I'm an open book these days."
"I think we all are," snorts Alfie, quietly gesturing to the microphone pack affixed to Finn's swimming trunks.
The group violently shushes each other as the conveyer built begins to make a guttural, metal sound. With a thud, silver and neon suitcases plop and begin to spin around the belt. Tags affixed to the suitcases reveal the baggage.
The rules of the game? Each Islander has one suitcase; it's on them to kiss the person they believe their secret correlates to before going back to peel the tag off, revealing the answer. Wrong? Opposite team gets a point, with the teams dividing you, Dana and Kat against Alfie, Finn, Suresh and Eddie.
It seems simple enough, but you feel your palms begin to grow sweaty.
Dana rushes to the conveyor belt and grabs a suitcase. She wheels it over to the girls and unzips it.
