They took us from around the Battery up to Hudson Square to Bowery and down the lower East Side. We probably would of gone farther but Match and Muddy agreed we should stay in Lower Manhattan. I swear Match is trying to be just like Mud. He still looks up to him I guess. Now we're on our way back to Newsie Square and it's already noon.
"Jack?" Gabe ran up beside Jack who was at the front of the group. He had somehow become the leader of the group during the journey. "How many boroughs is there in 'Hattan?"
Jack looked down at him and ruffled his hair. "Eh, there's Lower Manhatt'n 'course," he said proudly and Crutchie and Race cheered him on, "Then the Upper West and East Side. Up top is them Harlem boys."
"There's goil newsies up d'ere too, ya know!" Race tipped his hat towards me and I grinned. We walked along side each other so of course Muddy walked behind us, watching the whole time.
"Not a lot of 'em. There's a whole gang of goils in the Bronx tho! You should meet 'em!" Crutchie mentioned to me.
"She's not a newsie, by the way," Match interrupted, "Lily's our laundry girl." I felt my cheeks start to blush so I turned my face away embarrassed. Now I wanted to kick both Muddy and Match.
The three newsies went silent and gave each other awkward glances. "Oh, we's thought since Race mentioned..." Jack started but trailed off, "H-how's about wes take a stop at Irving Hall? Meet a friend of ours, huh?" He looked back at us and I gave him and appreciative smile. He smirked back and... was that a blush? Before I could figure it out he turned his head and began walking us in a new direction.
__________
First off Irving Hall is beautiful. You can tell it's not very new but it's definitely kept up to it's vintage style. The front of the theater is beautiful stone and marble. The inside of the theater is covered in a deep ruby rug and the seats were carved wood. Unlike some theaters the floor was clear except for the chairs and some tables but the balconies were lined with the typical rows. Two private balconies framed the stage and the red curtain must be at least 20 feet long. The stage was surrounded by carved railing that the performers danced around. The theater was filled with cheering men and a few lady's. The more I looked the more I realized that most men were cheering and whistling at the main lady onstage.
We arrived in the middle of a performance of a beautiful singing curly ginger haired lady and back up dancers. She and the dancers were dressed in short blue costumes that made me question if Zack, Dice, and Gabe should be here as they dance around to the music. Muddy and Match could only seem to gawk at the singer like hound dogs. While Jack, Race, and Crutchie cheered on the ladies onstage and found a place to watch.
"Yeah, Medda!" Jack yelled amongst the crowd. Medda must be the performer because she turned in our direction and blew Jack a kiss. He put a hand on his chest and bowed his head laughing.
