~I sleep so we can meet~

Evangeline's PoV
I paced back and forth in my room. It's been a day and I've not seen or heard anyone walk past my door or anywhere in the house really. At dinner and breakfast, I was alone. It was strange, normally there's always someone here. Even if the others leave the room when I enter, at least I still know they're here but right now, I've not seen them.

It's making me feel uneasy.

I couldn't stop thinking about when Tobias had gotten angry when I asked about the girl he was supposed to marry. I also can't stop thinking about what she said to me before she left. "I'm sorry I couldn't help."

What does that mean? Help with what?

Unless, the brothers are planning something. Why else would I be exchanged and treated to this luxurious lifestyle? It makes no sense. I can't believe I didn't realise it sooner. They're planning something and I assume they're trying to keep me happy and make me less likely to run away by giving me education and everything else. Are they trying to make me feel like I owe them?

Maybe when Enzo had tried to hide me he was protecting me from them. Why else would they send him to another country? But why was I drugged? They must've told me about the mafia to keep me terrified to run away because mafias are literally known for anything illegal you can think of.

None of this makes sense yet it all makes perfect sense at the same time!

The only thing on my mind now is what are they planning on doing to me.

Suddenly, a loud knock on my door sounded through my room. I paused and stared at the door, unsure of whether to alert the person on the other side of my presence. Maybe if I stay quiet, they'll think I'm not in here and look for me elsewhere.

With a warning, the door handle began to turn and I began to panic. I should've hid when I had the chance. I'll have to face this head on now.

The door was pushed open to reveal Tobias. I haven't seen him since he yelled at me, and I've already mentioned that, haven't I?

He didn't say a word as he closed the door behind him and sat on my bed, facing me. I stood still, not even daring to look his way but I knew his eyes were on me. "I shouldn't have yelled at you yesterday," he began, making me think he was apologising. "She just pissed me off."

I didn't say a word as I turned to look out of the window. They're probably gonna kill me. But what's the point in that, they exchanged me so obviously they want me for something. "Why am I here?," I suddenly asked, feeling a wave confidence hit me.

"I told you that you were-."

"Exchanged?," I finished his sentence off with a questioning tone. "I know. You've only said that the last hundred times I've asked you. So I'm asking you now to tell me why I'm still here. Why aren't I dead? You're in the mafia, everything you do is for a reason."

He stayed silent. "It was a mistake coming to talk to you." He stood up and prepared to leave, his back turned towards me.

"No," I spoke demandingly. "Sit back down. You can't walk out on me like this."

He paused, his back muscles tensed. He didn't turn to look at me. "Sit," I demanded my voice firm and harsh. He slowly turned and stared at me in disbelief. Slowly, he stormed over to me, his anger rising.
