ROBB WORRIED FOR THE SAFETY OF RHAENERYS THE ENTIRE TIME DAENERYS flew back to Castle Black. And as they landed, he worried more and more as the hours began to tick by and there was still no sign of Rhaenerys or Jamie.
He wasn't the only one who looked sick about her whereabouts.
Ser Barris and Daenerys had not stopped pacing since the moment they arrived, neither knowing peace without the young girl's presence.
Daenerys had half a mind to fly back and retrieve her niece, but was talked out of it by Ser Jorah and Jon, who both agreed that Rhaenerys could handle her own. After all, she had four dragons and was carrying a great warrior, even if he was an oath breaker.
Whenever that was true though, Robb didn't care.
The only thing preventing him from stealing a dragon or horse and going back out there himself was Tormund physically restraining him.
"They should be back by now, it doesn't take that long for a dragon to get here," He said desperately.
"That may be the case, but there's no reason you should go back out there and get yourself killed!" The giant grunted.
Even he had a hard time holding Robb until suddenly, a screeching sound caused them both to freeze and watch as Jamie Lannister came flying in, clutching a grief stricken and sobbing Rhaenerys in his arms.
The Kingslayer had taken over flying the dragon as Rhaenerys was inconsolable and incapable of doing it herself. After seeing what she saw, a wretched creature with a black arrow slay her dragon, she was barely comprehensive.
As Jamie landed the dragon, Rob ran as fast as he could towards her. He got there faster than Ser Barris and Daenerys, immediately shoving Jamie away from Rhaenerys. He took her off the screeching dragon and into his arms.
Rhaenerys cried immediately, her tearful brown eyes causing Robb's heart to pang. Above all else, he hated to see her upset and for a moment anger blazed through him. This anger was directed at Jamie, who he turned his glare on, thinking that Rhaenerys' grief was his fault.
"What did you do?" He growled at the Kingslayer, drawing his sword. Jamie's tired and heavy eyes widened. He quickly stepped back as John, Tormund and Ser Jorah came running over. When Jamie said nothing and Rhaenerys sobbed louder, Robb grew angrier. "I said, what did you do?" He repeated to Jamie. The Lannister merely hung his head and looked away.
"I did nothing," Jamie insisted, backing away from Robb's blade. "I—I," he hesitated for a minute, as if he was still processing the words. "It was the king of the dead." He finally said, lowering his eyes. "He—He killed the dragons as we were taking off. There was nothing that I could do. They fell right before her eyes and she's been upset ever since."
If Rob didn't know any better, then there was a twinge of guilt in Jamie's voice. However, he did not care about the king slayer, only about Rhaenerys. Therefore, he abandoned his anger with Jamie and immediately turned back to her. She was now being comforted by an equally upset Daenerys.
"Lyanna," the girl sobbed, her shoulders shaking violently. "She's gone, Danny! He killed her. He killed her and then he killed Viscerion like it was nothing. He killed our children!"
"I know, I know," Daenerys held her niece tightly to her chest, but there was nothing she could say to console her. Rhaenerys just kept sobbing Rob quickly took the girl into his arms again.
"It will be okay my love, they will be at peace. You will see them again one day," He said as she clung to him.
"No it won't," Rhaenerys replied. "It will never be okay. They killed my dragon. They killed my mother."
She cried harder as she said this and Robb could do nothing but stare solemnly while everyone else turned their head down in anger and grief. Robb shared a look with Daenerys, and the woman studied the way he held her niece. It was tender, soft, like he was holding something delicate. That was how he felt about Rhaenerys. Daenerys saw that now and she felt an overwhelming amount guilt over what she had to do. She knew that her niece loved Robb, but all things had to come to an end eventually.
The thought made her sick, but duty is the death of love. It always had been, and it always would be.
Daenerys thought about this as Ser Barris rushed off. When he came back, he was carrying a clear liquid. It was milk of the poppy, and he gestured for Robb to give it to Rhaenerys to calm her down.
"Here," He said softly, "Before she cries herself sick."
Robb took the bottle in his hands and gently lifted Rhaenerys from his chest. When her tearful eyes met his, he lifted his fingers up to wipe at her cheeks. Then he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead before opening the vile and gently making her drink.
Rhaenerys, trusting Robb, did not question him about it. And soon she felt her eyes begin to flutter as she drifted off to sleep, her sobs dying down.
Soon, Castle Black was beginning to get dark. It wasn't safe to be out in the courtyard anymore, so Ser Barris decided to take it upon himself to see to the dragons so that Daenerys and Rhaenerys could grieve in peace.
Jon Snow, Jamie Lannister, Tormund and Ser Jorah all went into the Great Hall to discuss what they had seen. Daenerys did not join them, but she did not have to, for she saw the white walkers herself and that was enough proof to last her a lifetime. She now believed Jon Snow, and she now believed that this fight was bigger than the one of her birthright. Jon Snow had been right—She would never be queen if there was no kingdom to rule over.
Her only thoughts now were those of Rhaenerys, and how to defeat the white walkers. She knew it would not be easy and planning an attack would not be the greatest idea due to her grief stricken mind. So, she paid attention to Rhaenerys. She approached Robb as he began to take the young girl to her room.
"Thank you," she said softly as they both entered. Robb set Rhaenerys on the bed and her eyelashes flutter slightly, but she did not wake. Once Robb was sure that she would stay asleep, he turned to Daenerys.
"You do not have to thank me," He said, "I love her, and there's nothing that I wouldn't do for her. We may be enemies, but she will always be the one thing we have in common."
At this, Daenerys felt her heart soften. The guilt that was eating her became prominent once more, but she tried not to let Robb see. She knew how deeply he felt for her niece and telling him of her plans would only complicate things more. She wasn't sure whether Rhaenerys would keep him in the dark or not but until her niece woke up, Daenerys would not be the one to break the news. She would not tell Robb that Rhaenerys would be married off to another man. Instead, she decided that for one night she would let Rhaenerys have her peace.
Daenerys planned to leave the young lovers alone, but before she did, she turned and looked at Robb Stark dead in the eyes. It was the first time the young wolf and would be Queen had ever seen eye to eye.
"In another life," Daenerys said softly, "I would have let her marry you."
Her words weighed heavily on Robb's heart, and silently he pursed his lips.
"And in this one?" He asked.
Daenerys said nothing.
She merely looked at Rhaenerys again and then she was gone. She didn't have the heart to tell Robb the truth.
Your beloved will be promised to someone else she thought in her mind, so for tonight a wolf may sleep amongst a dragon. Only for tonight, for tomorrow things will change, and the dragon will now belong to the Warrior.
