It was just your normal night and the members of the Gumell family were all fast asleep.
Yaseer's mother had come to help take care of her son, so she was also in the house.
Grrrrrr
Hauwa turned from side to side due to the unpleasant sound from her alarm clock.
"Urghhhhh!"she irritatedly pulled her pillow over her head.
Yaseer was peacefully asleep on the other side of the bed.
His light snores could barely be heard."That stupid clock!"Hauwa got up and stomped to turn off the alarm.
I'll definitely break you someday!
She glared at the clock as though it were an animate object even though she was the one who set it to wake her up by 12:00am.
Hauwa sluggishly dragged her feet back to the bed when an almost ear deafening sound caught her attention.
What was that sound?
She sat on the bed for few seconds before shrugging off the thought and settling back into bed.
The sound went off again.
This time it was even louder than the first one and it was followed by husky voices mumbling inaudible words.Hauwa jerked up instantly and turned to their bedroom window.
She slowly got out of the bed and tiptoed to the window.
The lights outside on the building brightened the deep dark night.Hauwa gently opened the curtain from a corner and peeped through.
Her eyes caught hold of an unfamiliar muscular looking man holding what seemed to be an AK47 while standing by the security post as if guarding the gate to see if anyone was coming. The continuous movement of his head from left to right made her suspicion grow even more.
"Yaseer, Yaseer," Hauwa called her husband in a really low voice. "Yaseer there's a guy outside...Yaseer he's...he's holding a gun."her eyes pooled with tears as the worst thoughts flooded her head.
She resulted to gently shaking Yaseer since he wasn't responding to her calling his name.
Yaseer's eyes slowly opened and were about to close when Hauwa whisper yelled "Don't go back to sleep! I think they're some kidnappers or so downstairs!"
Yaseer's eyes widened immediately.
"KID..."Hauwa placed her palm over his mouth and signified that he keep his voice down.Soon the banging of the front door could be heard.
Hauwa's heart left it's position and all that was in her head were
Noor, SabihShe quickly held both her sleeping babies in her arms as she muttered "What do we do?" to Yaseer.
"Find a ..." The sound of the front door violently opening interuptted.
"Find him!"the feminine voice ordered.
"Go and hide yourself and the kids, take momma with you too." Yaseer walked towards their room door and moved his hand signaling Hauwa she could go.Hauwa made sure not to make any sound and at the same time made sure the twins didn't wake up or cry.
When she finally got to her mother in-law's room, she woke her up and explained what was happening before leading her to the basement of the house through the attic.
It was quite dusty.
Cobwebs here and there.
Old things and boxes everywhere.
Hauwa's nose itched to sneeze but she luckily held it back when it was about to blow up their cover."Where is he???"the feminine voice was accompanied by loud footsteps.
Yaseer tried to slowly creep under their bed but the door bursted open at the wrong timing.
He was already halfway under but his lower parts were still outside.
"Lol," Zarah's heel boots clicked the bedroom floor. "Look who's tryna play hide and seek." A dirty smirk was plastered on her face as she squatted down to look under the bed.
Their eyes locked.
"Come on, hide and I'll count." Zarah's evil laugh didn't make things any better.
One of the men who entered the room with Zarah cocked his gun.
"Not yet," Zarah held out her hand at him while smiling. "He needs to hide first, right Mr Yaseer Gumell? You're pretty good at this game of hide and seek, right? Or aren't you? Did you forget how you hid for years?" Zarah stood up straight from the floor.
She began pacing the room.
"I see you've put your wife and kids in a safe place indeed,"she laughed. "Anyways, back to our game. I'll give you 120 seconds to hide wherever you want within this room. If I don't find you, you win. But if I turn out to find you..."she paused to laugh.
"You wouldn't even get to say goodbye to your family. So let the fun begin." Zarah turned to face a wall in the room.Meanwhile, in the basement Hauwa had managed to contact the police with her trembling hands and prayed they arrived on time.
Tears which had pooled her eyes began to escape and rolled down her cheeks. She made silent and sincere prayers with her whole heart.
Please Ya Allah protect us all and let the police respond on time.
The basement was pretty old and the windows were all old and rusty.
There wasn't proper ventilation and it was as though they would suffocate down there."113..."Zarah counted.
Yaseer had crawled out from under the bed and beads of sweat trickled down his face.
He stood up right and slowly walked towards Zarah.
His aim was to ambush her from behind.
He didn't bother that there were two other men standing there with guns in their hands."118...119."
Jump!
And he jumped on Zarah's back making her fall to the ground.
He then turned over so that he was on the floor with his legs wrapped around Zarah and his arms wrapped tightly around her neck. The armed men cocked their guns ready to fire at Yaseer.
"Get off me you son of a... Get off me!!!" Zarah struggled to get free from Yaseer's hold."What are you guys doing?!! SHOOT!" Zarah tried gasping for air to survive.
Yaseer didn't flinch at her order and still held real tight to her neck.
The two men pulled their triggers.
Only a bullet went out from one of the two men's gun.
The bullet luckily didn't hit Yaseer but Zarah's leg instead.
"AHHHHH!!!" Zarah let out a really loud yell as the bullet passed through her skin and into her body.Blood started to ooz out nonstop.
The two men with the guns were about to escape from the room ot of fear of what they had done when an officer surprisingly bursted in."Stay where you are to avoid any further difficulty." He pointed his piston at the criminals as if it were some James bond movie.
The two men moved back slowly and dropped their guns before raising their hands in the air to show that they had willingly surrendered.
Once another officer was told to handcuff Zarah, Yaseer got off her immediately.
"You'll pay for this!!! I promise you!!!" Zarah screamed at the top of her lungs with all the strength that was left her.
The officers finally rounded all the criminals and hushed then into their van.
Once Hauwa heard the sirens of the police van fade away, she came out of their hiding place to check if the atmosphere was fine.
When she confirmed everything was cleared, she brought her babies out with her mother in-law trailing behind her.
Hauwa couldn't just fathom why all these were happening.
She went to her room and put her babies on the bed.Yaseer was on the floor covered immersely in cold sweat.
He panted so fast.
It was as if he had ran a marathon."Yaseer." Hauwa fell to the floor to hug her husband.
