Donna felt so embarrassed after she had sent Wendy away and remained alone in her room with Angie.
Hating that she reacted this way now that her rational mind was back and not controlled by panic.
But the embarrassment of her behavior was not what her mind was on, no, it was the one that came from the creature's words.
She blushed even harder thinking about her words and how she called her pretty, no one had ever said that and she didn't know how to react to it other then to fall harder.
Donna almost wanted to cry again.
She told her to truth, she could have left her in that moment, the fog wouldn't have stopped her but she still stayed and consoled her instead of running like many would given the chance.
She laid on her side, holding a sleeping Angie to her chest, unable to wrap her head around it correctly.
It felt like a dream come true.
To find someone that could look past the ugliness of her face, this was a lost hope until today, today when she was called pretty and beautiful.
That night Donna couldn't sleep until very late so she woke up late and changed into cleaner clothes and fixed her bun.
But as she picked up her veiled hat off the desk in the room she froze.
"So what will you do?" Angie asked, sensing her thoughts.
"I don't know, I am scared." She told her doll, looking unsure, twisting the rim of her hat in her hands.
"I heard what she said, I believe that she isn't lying."
"I know...."
"Then maybe it is worth the risk?"
"I know..." She repeated, anxiety gripping her heart as she set the hat back down and headed to the door, taking a deep breath as she grabbed the door handle. "Come on Donna, now or never, you got to make the choice now or never."
She stood frozen, hesitation burning in her heart, the veil was a shield, protecting her from evil, it was her confidence, she was naked without it.
But Wendy's words sounded so sincere, she hurt herself for Mother Miranda's sake to prove to Donna she was not lying, she saw her face and didn't run, called her pretty, she was mad that someone left a blemish on her face instead of the Cadou mark distracting her, she would have fought Miranda for her.
And with the positive outweighing the negative, despite her mounting and gripping fear, she opened the door.
Her feet felt heavy going down the hall and then the stair case to the living room.
"What a nice surprise." Donna jumped a bit, a part of her having expected being alone again and not finding the creature in her kitchen, covering in flour and batter.
Donna approached with wide eyes.
"Hi." Was all she could get out.
"Hello hellooooo, you never sleep in this much so I thought you needed your beauty sleep and I tried making something."
Yeah Donna could see that 'something', they looked like pancakes, three to be exact, weirdly shaped ones, stacked on a plate set over in front of the seat she would always take.
She paced her eyes over the rest of her kitchen, it looked like the creature had gone to war with the food supplies, flour in impossible to reach places and covering her clothes and hands, a good pile of burnt or runny pancakes thrown aside, missing the trashcan completely, sticking to the wall or on the ground, clearly showing her lack of knowledge for anything food related when it came to cook.
Donna sat down in her place, looking at the misshapen food, these ones looked perfectly cooked making her understand all the other ones were mistakes in Wendy's tries to make her something, she found it touching.
"Thank you." Her shoulders relaxed, mood brightening as she saw the creature smile brightly at her as she cut a small piece with her fork and popped it in her mouth, could... Be a lot better but she still took another, not planning on leaving such hard work behind. "It's... Nice."
"Don't lie, I know I messed up." Wendy laughed, not at all feeling bad about her poor cooking. "All I know is from watching others cook, mostly you and this seemed the easiest to not mess up."
"Alright I admit it could be better but it is a good first try." She smiled back softly, taking another bite. She was more then happy having small talk and even more happy that the lack of veil was not brought up, she knew herself and how fast she'd jump up and go get it if it was pointed out, seven and a half second to get to her room from this spot to be exact.
"You are too nice."
"I appreciate it, thank you."
"I wanted to make you something after I made you feel bad."
"It's not entirely your fault.... After the Cadou got implanted my parents couldn't even look at me, only Claudia could but they all died and everyone looked at me disgusted."
"Yeah I get it, none of my scars bother me but these." She put her hand on her mask tho still smiling. "These are a bother.... So I get why you don't want to take it off but I promise you, your face is much more charming."
Donna looked away.
"Awe how cute, now I can see the blushes instead of guess when you heart-rate picked up." Donna choked on her piece of bland pancake, eyes wide and glued to the creature's.
"Y-you can hear that?"
"Of course I can tho not to my usual abilities." She tapped her collar. "But yes, I could hear you heartbeat in your chest, adorable." Donna wondered if the creature was trying to embarrass her on purpose right now.
"A-alright."
"Awe don't be like that, what do you say about me sharing some information with you about my past to make it up to you? Something bird mommy would die to know?"
Donna was curious about Wendy, wanting to know more about her but she never asked.
"Why?"
"To make up for the incident yesterday, I should have never leaned on those grave, I assume those are your parents, I am sorry. To make up I could tell you about mine."
"It's alright... I already forgave you."
"So you don't wanna hear it?"
"No no.... I am interested, really." She admitted.
"Alright so lean back and relax, this will be a while."
