"To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream—For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause, there's the respect, That makes calamity of so long life"

Afternoon

Sebastian woke up with his neck throbbing. He opened his eyes and only saw that a few dim lights were burning in the ceiling. He checked his ring finger. His daylight ring was still there. Cassandra had made it for him before...Before she died.

"Hello?" Sebastian croaked out. "Help me!"

He was thirsty and hungry. He couldn't smell anyone near but he was ravenous. It was painful and his stomach burned.

How had he awoken? He wasn't sure. A few weeks or days ago, he had regained consciousness. He was able to listen and push forth his spirit to reach others. Maybe it was the power of the token Cassie had given him? Just being out of that coffin was a miracle to him. But he knew one thing the human who had realized him was no Puritan, like the ones in Cassandra's village. They were quite different. Sebastian held the door open and turned to turn his head more.

"Ahhhhh," he hissed as the heavy chains singed his neck.

"Sorry," a dark-skinned man in strange clothing said. "I brought you something to eat."

"I thank you," Sebastian groaned. "These chains are burning me."

"Yeah," the man said. "I'm Dorian. I work here in the library. We're not going to hurt you. We just need more information. Here, take this blood bag."

Sebastian opened his mouth and his whole face darkened as his fangs extended from the smell of blood. He sucked down the whole blood bag in a few seconds.

"More, please," Sebastian begged. "I am famished..."

"I bet," Dorian said. "But we need to talk first. I did some research on the history of this land. You had mentioned a Cassandra? There is a grave marker for her near the school. Can you tell me about that?"

Sebastian winced as Dorian reached out with a cloth and wiped a trail of blood that dripped from his mouth.

"It tis a sad tale," Sebastian recounted. "When I was a child, my parents sold me to a ship. I come to find that the sailors were blood drinkers. After many years of me trying to escape at each port of call, they made me one of them. We lived as pirates for decades, killing and dining at our kind is destined to do. Life at sea was not for me. One day we came to the Port of New Orleans, I saw a beautiful raven-haired beauty. I left my crew and followed her. We fell in love. But I was greedy and fed from the humans of her land. The leaders of her village asked Cassandra, a powerful witch, to kill the monster terrorizing them. It was I. She gave me that token to protect me. She summoned an even worse monster, never realizing that it would kill her, too. To protect me, Cassandra put me to sleep and the last thing I saw was that monster tearing off her limbs..."
Dorian reached up to wipe away the tears, but Sebastian jerked his head painfully to the side.

"Nay, let me feel the pain. You see why I wanted to try to give life to my love again? It twas all my fault," Sebastian breathed.

"But witches are mortal. How were you going to bring her back?" Dorian asked.
