Chapter 23

This is the worst thing ever, why did grandma have to choose me, Addison's the one that wants to leave, she should have the coordinates. What am I supposed to do, the aliens need me, they need to find Utopia, but I don't want to leave, I can't. The art course at mountain college, my family, Zed. I can't leave him, I can't.

I ended up at the park and sat down on a swing. "Harper?" Zed says as he finds me and I look up at him with tears in my eyes, "what do I do?" I ask, voice breaking "I think you know what you need to do, you just don't want to believe it" "they need me, but I need you" "you don't need me, you never have, I mean you're Harper Wells, you don't need anyone, your perfect" "I don't wanna live without you Zed" "I don't wanna live without you either" I then give him the tightest hug I've ever given, holding him close. "Hey you didn't zap me!" he says excitedly, "I think I'm getting the hang of them, and as if I'm not gonna hug you ever again, no way." he wipes the tears away from my eyes and locks his lips with mine.

The next morning I told the aliens that I would be coming with them, then went back home to pack. Mum called Addison and I to talk to her before we left "girls, there's something I have to share with you, I should have done this years ago, I just wish I was as strong as you two" she says before revealing that she too has white hair hidden under a wig. "Oh my god" "your beautiful mum" Addison and I say before giving her a hug.

The two of us headed to the alien ship and when we got there A-lan, A-li and A-spen met with us. "With the reactor damaged, there is a 67.9% chance that we will not have enough energy to leave orbit" "we must try, the longer we wait the worse our odds". Bree and the cheer squad come to say goodbye to Addison and I let them have their moment. Zed arrives and comes straight to me "I don't wanna leave.." "I know but the aliens need you, which is why I'm coming with you!" "really!!", "it is impossible Zed, only our species is capable of space travel on the mothership, you'd be fried by our stardust energy in a minute," the aliens say sadly "I was afraid we'd be separated by a couple of hundred miles when we went to college, now well be galaxies away," Zed says and I give him the biggest hug ever, "Harp, you gotta let go now" "no, no I don't want to, I don't wanna let you go," I say with tears in my eyes, "it'll be okay," he says pulling me away and kissing my head.

"Core reactor shutting down, emergency systems activated," the mothership says, "we must leave now" "even with our stardust power depleted we must risk it" the werewolves then come over to help "you can find an infinite power source to recharge our ship?" A-li questions "you can borrow our moonstone" "the moonstone is powerful but it's harmful to our people" "not if you have an adapter, we just have to filter the moonstone power through our Z-bands," Eliza says from the video call "you all would sacrifice to help us?" A-spen asks "wolves always have each other back, Harper and Addison are a part of our pack, forever," Willa says looking at us.

We all get transported up to the ship and work together to get this ship up and running, "only our people can connect to the ship's stardust reactor, but unfortunately, the moonstones power is lethal to us, but you two being half human might just work" "alright sis, which one of us is gonna do it?" "I will," my sister says holding onto the sticks, "I can't do it, it's not working for me," she says letting go "Harper, you're the only one that can do this," she tells me handing the sticks, I take a deep breath and use my powers. I almost had it but it was too strong, I couldn't hold it. "It's too strong" "We must re-establish the connection now or all is lost," A-lan says "Take my hand, the power can flow through me," Zed says picking up the stick I dropped, "what no, you'll be fried in a minute!" "It's okay," he says and I grab his hand.

He lets go of the stick and holds onto me trying to catch his breath, "are you okay, I'm so sorry" I say cupping his cheek and he breathes out a small 'yeah'. The lights turn on and A-spen announces that we have full power and that we must leave now. Everyone rushes to get beamed back down before we take off, Zed and I stay on the ship to say goodbye before he gets beamed down with tears in our eyes, "I love you Zed" "I love you too Harper, to the end of the universe" "we'll see each other again right? Somehow", "Someday" he says before leaning down and kissing me.

Before I know it he's gone and I break down, falling to the ground. I feel a hand on my shoulder and look up to see my sister behind me. She helps me up, pulling me into a long hug and I cry into her shoulder. "Why me, why couldn't you get the coordinates" "I'm so sorry Harper, but it was meant to be you" "I miss him," I say, voice breaking "I know".
