Hui Gai hated this Demon.
Not just because he had killed Rumi's parents for some still unknown personal gain, but he really was just a horrible person.
It was unsurprising that he showed no remorse for killing two innocent demons, one of which he very blatantly thought of as his property, but it was in the casual way which he grabbed Hui Gai and teleported them to Zinked.
It was mountainous country, that was Hui Gai's first impression of the place.
There was a certain smell about the place too, a harsh tickling sort of smell which suggested the air was not clean, and the lingering aftermath of an explosion...like stale, used dynamite after it had been detonated.
Either that or someone farted.
Zago wasn't impressed.
All around them were peaks of varying heights, mists clinging to the top so they were obscured and the whole place looked rather bleak. Everything was grey; from the loose stony trail upon which they stood now, to the actual mountains around them. Even the sky had lost its lustre, now grim with gathering clouds.
There was nothing remotely green either, no trees, no plants, no flowers...not even annoying weeds.
Just grey boulders and rocks, which must have fallen from greater heights.
"I tracked your parents to this, their last resting place." The Demon Master sneered disdainfully, clutching Hui Gai's little shoulder painfully.
Can we kill him now? Zago asked, quite sincerely.
No...let's wait. I get the feeling we will not be enough to do it. He's quite powerful. Hui Gai told her cautiously.
He had to be careful because if the Demon Master thought for one second that Hui Gai was talking to someone other him...he didn't want to think about the consequences of that...
And Hui Gai was excited to try out his idea. He thought he had guessed correctly what his weapon was called, and it took all of his self control not to test it out now.
He hoped that Baoshan Sanren had heard his call and that she was on her way. There was no one else he could rely on, with his friends out of action right now.
Wei WuXian’s grandmother was far more reliable than anyone else, and what was more, she was capable. Hui Gai had sensed her powers long before, even when she refused to accept him as her grandson's friend. They had come a long way since that time...he thought with fond memories.
The Demon Master turned Rumi's little body around towards a tiny building nestled into the crease where the mountain met the ground. They were already quite high up the slope now, and down below, Hui Gai had spotted a tiny silver sliver...it might be a river so far down.
But aside from that, there were only overlapping tiers of grey mountains.
Nothing else.
Which was why this home was so unusual.
There were no other buildings anywhere here, not on the open slopes they could see around them.
And this house too, it looked as if it was trying to conceal itself from prying eyes by shrinking into itself. Everything about looked inwards, from the sloping roof to the door that appeared bent inwards. There was a single window, grimy and dirty looking on the right hand side to the grey door.
Even here...there was no colour.
The Demon Master kicked open the door that stayed swinging.
It was such a misuse of extra strength.
Zago growled dangerously in his head.
Hui Gai was concerned that this Demon Master would annoy her so much that she would take matters into her own hands, and he desperately hoped not. He had a feeling...every time this foul creature touched him, of the raw energy he harnessed, and his strength alone. Hui Gai sensed that even if he and Zago worked together as a team...it might not be enough.
This was why he kept trying to activate the stick.
In their current situation, any leverage that brought the advantage to their side was welcomed with open arms.
After all, there must be a reason why he and the Celestial Immortal had discovered it together right now, correct?
Hui Gai also did not believe in coincidence, like his friend.
For the millionth time, Hui Gai prayed to the universe that his PengYou was alright.
The Demon Master roughly pushed Hui Gai inside.
It was quite dark; what little light there was came from the dirty window.
Debris was strewn all around the single broad room. This place wasn't that big, either. Hui Gai thought that as himself, were he to stretch his arms out, he would be able to touch the opposite walls...just about.
If three people had lived here...wasn't it just a bit too small?
The whole place was in ruins too and from the cocky way this Demon Master had waltzed in, Hui Gai thought he had something to do with that.
The destruction was pitiful.
It was as if someone had thrown a fit of rage and destroyed any evidence of people living here, as if by doing something so mean, they were trying to obliterate their very existence.
Indeed...if Hui Gai could attribute a feeling to this place, it would be sorrow.
It was a very sad place.
His heart hurt for Rumi.
How scared must he have felt to see something like this? To have his home destroyed right in front of his eyes?
Don't worry, Boss. We'll make him pay. Zago vowed.
"Look around here...does anything seem familiar?" The Demon Master asked him.
His cruel gaze remained on Hui Gai's face.
He shook his head honestly; because he had never been here before.
There was a flicker of disappointment in the Demon Master's black eyes.
However...a flash of red in the corner caught Hui Gai's eyes. He didn't dare let himself linger, instead he forced himself to look back at the scary Demon.
The Demon Master held his palm out over the ground. He closed his eyes and concentrated.
On the ground, a black array was brought to life. It was half the size of the house, and it began to glow, slowly turning into a bright red. And as Hui Gai bent to examine it closer, he was horrified to discover that it had been drawn in blood.
