James grumbled at the big station.
"Why do I have to take your goods when I should be taking the express?!" he complained to Henry. Ever since Gordon had vanished Henry had taken over express duties. James thought he should be the one taking it.
"Because you're a small red engine who thinks he's bigger than he is." Henry said. Henry was a black five tender engine, he was almost the same size of Gordon and just as strong. James was only a medium sized, mixed traffic engine. He'd do local runs, but sometimes he would take the express. Henry continued. "However I am a big green engine who can handle the weight of the express. You would struggle and strain with it the entire way to Barrow, and certainly get stuck on the hill." James grew red in the face and said no more. Soon Henry puffed away with the express calling out to James.
"Take care James, mind your brakes ha,ha,ha!" Henry laughed as he puffed out of sight. James grumbled to himself. He didn't like Henry making fun of his first day crash.
Back when James first arrived on Sodor from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, he was a different looking engine. Instead of his familiar bright red paint he wore black with red strips. A number of engines were painted plain black as it was cheap. In those days he had wooden brake locks, these helped him to stop and were very important. However on a goods run down hill his wooden brake locks caught fire and he helplessly sped down the line and crashed into a field. James never did like to be reminded of that.
"Not my fault my builders cheaped out on the brakes." James muttered to himself, and puffed grumpily out of the station.
A concern the people had with the engines going missing was delayed or out right calculation of the usual trains. The fat controller rearranged the schedule to better fit his now lessened fleet.
Bear is a friendly diesel that the fat controller purchased from the other railway. He had loaned him to the other railway as they needed an extra diesel to help with the goods work, but he quickly asked for his return. Bear was happy to be home, but was shocked to learn about the ominous disappearances of some of the engines.
James fussed back into the yard with another goods train. He was relieved to see Bear had returned.
"Oh thank goodness you're back Bear. Now I can get back to pulling coaches again." he said with much optimism.
