A few days after the fat controller told the engines some replacements would be coming to help handle the workload those engines arrived. One was to be sent on Edward's branch to fill in for Boco.
His name was Derek, he was a Clayton Diesel-electric Type 1, but more commonly known as a class 17 diesel. He was a jolly fellow and was keen on making a good first impression with everyone. He and Edward got along well, even the twins admired his hard working nature. However not everything was perfect. His class was infamous for their overheating problems, some days he'd pull his trains with ease, the others his engine would splutter, choke, then die on him. This mostly happened up hills. Edward would mostly be the one to come to Derek's rescue, and would give him comfort in the situation. The others did too and didn't bad mouth him, well at least to his face.
"Fancy breaking down on a small hill." Bill said to his twin. The two small tank engines worked at the china clay pits near Brendam. They had shunted a train for Derek and were waiting for him to arrive.
"Agreed." Ben said. "If this keeps, he might as well stay in the sheds all day if we have to play rescue with him all the time." he scoffed. Just then Edward arrived.
"How horrid. Don't kick an engine while he's down, he's trying his best." Edward scolded the twins.
"If that's his best he's better off not trying." Bill scoffed.
"How would you like it if you were built incorrectly?"
"Well, we weren't. Our builders were competent."
"Where is Derek anyway?" Ben asked.
"We switched jobs today, I thought it would brighten his spirits." Edward said.
"What, are you off your nut!?" Bill asked. "He'll just break down on the hill, and let the roads take the passengers."
"No he won't." Edward snapped. "His engine has been repaired and he's working like normal again."
"We'll see how long that lasts." muttered Ben. Edward ignored their thoughtless remarks about the diesel, and coupled up to the train of clay. He then set out to the docks to deliver the load.
The Arlesdale branchline had its new arrival the same day as the Brendam branch's. The engine was a LMS Ivatt Class 2MT tank engine, and his name was Arthur.
