It will take a while to make you smile

Somewhere in these eyes

I'm on your side

"Usually, Alby does the tour for the Greenies," Newt began, glancing back at Emma as they walked. "But... well, there's a lot to discuss and prepare for tonight. So, today's the exception, which means... I'm your guide for the day, Greenie."

His voice was cheerful, trying to ease the tension, but the vagueness of his explanation wasn't lost on Emma. In fact, it only added to the frustration building inside her. She trailed a few paces behind him, arms crossed, a deep frown etched on her face.

She didn't want to be here with Newt; she didn't want to be here at all.

Zart had just started to earn a sliver of her trust. He'd been willing to give her something no one else had; answers. He seemed to understand why she was so distrustful after being thrown into this strange place, literally kept in the dark.

Newt, on the other hand, was just another unknown, another person being cagey with the truth.

Newt wasn't blind to her resentment.

He'd seen it before, every Greenie had that guarded look when they first arrived. Still, there was something about Emma's icy demeanor that unsettled him in a way he couldn't quite explain. It wasn't just the usual fear or distrust that all Greenies carried; it felt personal like her coldness toward him affected him more than it should.

That was new.

He tried to brush off the feeling, reminding himself that this was all normal. Every new arrival was scared, confused, and even angry.

They all went through it, himself included.

But something about her, about this, felt different, and he hated how much it gnawed at him.

"I know you must be confused," he said, his voice softer now, almost pleading. "It's a lot to take in all at once, but you'll get there, eventually. We all went through the same thing when we arrived."

Emma barely acknowledged his words. Her gaze remained fixed on the ground, her mind a whirlwind of unanswered questions.

Nothing here made sense.

Every glance, every word, every gesture from these boys only deepened the mystery. If only she could remember something, anything, that would explain why she was here.

"You're safe here," Newt added, a note of sincerity creeping into his voice. "I promise you that."

For a moment, she lifted her eyes to meet his. There was something genuine about him, and that was the problem.
