I felt empty space, never could explain

Like you were erased, never could replace

Now it's so clear, with you right here

 Like you were never gone

Alby and Newt returned not long after, this time with a small, pudgy boy trailing behind him, trying to keep up.

The boy was struggling under the weight of a large pile of supplies, each step making it clear that he was on the verge of dropping everything. His face was red, and his curly hair clung to his sweat-damp forehead. Despite his clumsiness, he had an air of determination about him.

Emma recognized him from earlier that day, he was the one who had eagerly waved at her when she first arrived.

"Greenie, meet Chuck," Alby said, gesturing toward the boy. "He's going to help you get settled in."

Chuck was by far the youngest kid she'd seen that day. He was short, with round cheeks and a wide smile that made him seem almost too innocent for the Glade. His arms were barely able to hold onto the stack of supplies, and just as Alby finished introducing him, Chuck's grip faltered.

The supplies scattered across the ground in a clattering heap.

Emma smiled warmly at the boy, feeling an instant connection. There was something about him that tugged at her heart, a sense of vulnerability wrapped in pure, unguarded friendliness.

She wanted to protect him, even though she barely knew him.

"Don't worry, I've got it all covered... Greenie," Chuck said, beaming up at her, clearly trying to fit in with the slang everyone used. He knelt quickly, scrambling to pick up the fallen supplies, his face flushed from embarrassment.

Alby shook his head, amused. "Chuckie was last month's Greenie. Now it's your turn."

"Chuckie," Emma repeated softly, liking the nickname. She'd definitely be using that for the boy. There was something about his youthful energy that felt comforting amidst the chaos of the Glade.

Alby gave Chuck a pat on the shoulder, which caused the boy to drop the remaining items still in his hands. Emma chuckled under her breath and knelt to help him pick everything up.

It was clear that the poor kid was overloaded with tasks, and she wondered how often he got stuck with jobs too big for him.

"Well, I've gotta go help with the bonfire," Alby said, standing up. "I trust you're in good hands with Chuckie here." Without waiting for a response, he turned and headed back to where the other Gladers were working.
