Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know

I said I'd never think I wasn't better alone

Can't change the weather, might not be forever

But if it's forever, it's even better

-

After breakfast, Emma found herself walking alongside Newt, their hands intertwined as they headed toward the hammocks. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft, warm light over the Glade. She'd made up a flimsy excuse about needing to walk him to the hammocks, just to "make sure he didn't collapse from sleep deprivation" on the way there.

It was a lousy excuse, yet no one had questioned her.

Everyone knew Newt had been up all night with Alby, so they chalked it up to Emma being a concerned Glader. Zart had been the only one to notice her poor attempt at subtlety, catching her eye from across the table with an amused smirk. She'd glared at him, silently daring him to say something, but Zart just shook his head and returned to his food, leaving her in peace.

Newt couldn't help but sneak glances at her, a little smile tugging at his lips. When they reached the array of hammocks, he gestured around with a dramatic flourish.

"You know, I wouldn't mind some company while I'm sleeping," he teased, casting her a mock-pitiful look. "Everyone else will be working, and I'll just be here, all on my own."

Emma laughed softly, nudging him with her shoulder. "Nice try, but some of us have to get to work," she replied with a smirk. "Zart's going to need help watering all the plants and picking out the veggies for dinner. Can't just leave him to do all of it."

Newt huffed dramatically, making a show of stumbling back into one of the hammocks.

He reached out, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her a little closer. "Oh, come on," he whined, looking up at her with an exaggerated pout. "Zart's done it plenty of times on his own. He can manage. Besides, I sleep better when you're around."

Emma couldn't help but laugh, leaning down into him until their faces were close. She cupped his cheeks in her hands, brushing her thumbs gently along his skin. "You're impossible, you know that?" she murmured, her lips curving into a smile before she kissed him softly, savoring the familiar rush of warmth that spread through her chest.

She could still feel those butterflies every time, no matter how many times they kissed.

She pulled back just enough to look at him, still cradling his face in her hands. "As much as I'd love to accept your offer, I really do have to get to work," she said, giving him an apologetic smile.
