Do you dare to look them right in the eyes?
'Cause they will run you down, down 'til the dark
and they will run you down, down 'til you fall
And they will run you down, down to your core
'til you can't crawl no more

Thomas and Newt exchanged a look, a cold shiver running down their spines as the implications settled in.
The Glade's walls, their last line of defense against the dangers of the Maze, were supposed to shut every night without fail. But now, for the first time, they weren't. The realization hit them all at once, the weight of what it could mean crashing down on them like a wave.
Newt's eyes went wide with alarm. "You're sure?" he asked, hoping that this was just another one of Gally's dumb theories.
Gally nodded stiffly, his jaw clenched. "Saw it with my own eyes. The doors just... stopped. Go see for yourself if you don't believe me," he scoffed, pushing the homestead door open for them.
Without hesitation, they all sprinted toward the entrance of the Maze. As they approached, they could see a crowd of Gladers already gathered, their faces tense and shadowed with fear and confusion.
Emma's heart hammered as she pushed through the crowd, spotting Zart near the front, looking as bewildered as everyone else. Not far from him stood Thomas and Teresa, both staring at the Maze entrance, their expressions a mixture of shock and dread.
The air was thick with tension, amplified by the quiet dread that gripped them all. The doors were still wide open, the usual rumbling they made as they sealed shut for the night never coming. The sky above grew darker by the second.
Emma clutched her arms around herself, trying to ignore the chill that seeped into her bones as the shadows grew longer around them.
This was wrong, all of it.
She could feel the collective anxiety building behind her, like a storm about to break, Gladers running around with the frantic energy of trapped animals. Their voices overlapped, a rising tide of panic that thrummed through the air, pushing against the uneasy silence that surrounded the Maze's entrance.
"Why aren't they closing?" Emma heard someone shout from behind her, a sharp edge of hysteria in their voice.
Her breathing grew more rapid as she glanced back at the other Gladers, some pacing in circles, others clutching at their hair, their faces pale with fear. She swallowed hard, trying to keep herself grounded, but the rising terror around her felt infectious.
